  • Lone

    Lone

    Sold

    SOLD

A very well done mid century modernist portrait composition, executed in oil onto board.

A single seated figure sits alone, looking out as us viewers. Her expression is gentle, yet there seems to be a sternness about her – her hands sit clasped atop a table. Her elongated figure is reminiscent of Modigliani, but overall composition also brings to mind the painting ‘Whistler’s Mother’. She has that same steady gaze as well as an air of infinite patience.

Above her is a monochrome portrait of a male figure, which could be her late husband. Perhaps one of the most brilliant aspects of this painting is what is to her right – the netted voile curtains. The artist has captured the texture of it wonderfully, and we also see  little plant pot on the window sill which adds a homeliness to the painting.

Overall, the painting is brilliantly executed and exudes such a distinctive character.

This oil on board is housed in a dark gilt frame which suits it wonderfully. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition .

  • Lyrical Abstraction

    Lyrical Abstraction

    Sold

    SOLD

A 20th century modernist abstract composition, painted in oil onto board.

This painting is reminiscent of the British Modern artist Peter Lanyon, who painted landscape both from many points of view, many visual perspectives, but also conceptually from different perspectives. Although it is unclear what this particular piece is inspired by (perhaps it not meant to be representative of anything at all!), it is clear that the artist is focused on the rhythm and meeting of forms. We see a mix of both harder and softer forms, built up in layers of colour, where lines and shapes meet and intersect on planes of colour behind it.

This oil on board is presented in  a wide walnut veneered frame that suits it well. Both the painting and frame are in good vintage condition, with some very minor wear to the frame  commensurate with age.

The nude figure rests on a seat with a red covering, and echoed behind her is the same red fabric, presumably a curtain. The artist has intentionally left out any realistic details, focusing instead on the formal elements of colour, shape and form. The composition is very well balanced, and lighter pastel colours of the nude figure juxtapose brilliantly with the deeper and richer colours that surround her.

  • Stacked Objects on Red

    Stacked Objects on Red

    Sold

    SOLD

A captivating original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of unidentified objects including vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface with a splash of striking red. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist has used a relatively monochrome palette with pops of colour including the green and yellow circles and red backdrop, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

A skilfully executed mid-century modernist style abstract composition with simplified forms, executed in oil onto board by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The composition appears to depict an outdoor scene with architectural elements. On the left, a human figure stands atop a series of geometric shapes, possibly suggesting steps or platforms. The figure is heading towards a structure resembling a building in the background.

Modernist in its ethos, the artist has skilfully abstracted the composition down to blocks of contrasting colour, demonstrating a sense of depth to the composition.

The colour palette is a mix of earthy and muted shades. The artist’s brushstrokes are broad and lightly textured, giving the painting a tactile quality.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting has some losses at its top edge, otherwise it is in good vintage condition.

    Size: 30.5 x 53.5 cm (including frame)
