A small and engaging animal composition, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This painting features a black sheep standing on a grassy hill, with a softly textured sky in the background. The composition is simple and uncluttered, capturing the folk-art style with a focus on form and texture.

The sheep’s woolly body is large and rounded, painted in a deep black hue with subtle variations in shading to suggest texture and depth. Its head and legs are slender in contrast to its thick fleece, giving it a distinctive and charming presence. The sheep’s eye is small and expressive, conveying a calm, slightly watchful demeanour.

The background consists of a gentle green field beneath a soft greyish-blue sky, both painted with a slightly weathered, textured quality that adds to the rustic charm of the piece.

The painting is presented in a cream frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
