    This calming, early morning scene of a fisherman out on his boat just exudes tranquillity.     On first glance the painting seems almost voyeuristic – we see the backs of two men staring at the undressed female figure. As we take the time to study the painting, in particular the female figure, we begin to notice her expression – she stares directly at us with an enigmatic gaze, completely aware of her position in the room and the attention she holds, both from us as well as the male figures we see. Her confidence is unmissable. Notably, the painting is by a female artist (Marianne Kanter). Could it be that this painting was a comment on the ‘male gaze’, a term coined a few years before in the 70s? We might never know the answer for sure, but it certainly makes the painting a beguiling and intriguing one.

    A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist figurative composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

    The composition is centered around a young male figure that punctuates the middle of the painting. He is depicted in an interior setting, seated beside a red chair, and we can discern some books on the platform beside him.

    The facial features of the figure have been intentionally left out. The artist has taken a bold approach to its representational style, reducing the scene down to blocks of contrasting muted colours to demonstrate depth and form to the painting.

    The use of muted colours as well as short expressive brushstrokes bring a soothing energy to the artwork, enlivening the scene and evoking a sense of playfulness and curiousity.
