  • The Fishing Village

    Sold

    SOLD.

An outstanding modernist style painting depicting a fishing village, dated 1955.

In the background, rows of huts line the ocean front. In the foreground, fishing nets are placed over a wooden support, hanging up to dry by the sand.

Muted tones of moss green, burnt sienna and blue-grey make up the palette, giving it a really lovely earthy feel, and a typical mid century vibe. The artist has skilfully managed to capture the malleable and translucent nature of the nets, but has retained a modernist ethos through the use of faceted brushstrokes and the flattening of space.

The painting is housed in a stunning olive green frame with visible wood grain and a gilt lining. The colour of the frame complements and enhances the green in the painting.

Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Laundry Time

    Sold

    SOLD.

An exceptional and very striking mid century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The painting depicts 2 figures in front of a row of houses, that appear to be hanging laundry out to dry. The scale of the 2 figures have been enhanced, making them the focal point of the composition.

Working with a modernist ethos in mind and painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has intentionally chosen not to focus on realistic details, and instead explores the use of colours, brushstrokes and form.

Working boldly in his medium of oil, confident and expressive brushstrokes fill the canvas, and the artist has used a vibrant and saturated colour palette, thoughtfully pairing and layering the various rich shades to give rise to this composition.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wooden frame with a gilt window and an inner linen border. There is some minor ageing to the frame, in keeping with the vintage style. On the painting, there is a small area of paint loss to the right side, as shown in the close ups, but the paint layer is stable overall. • Pensive Nude

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking and emotive large mid 20th century modernist style nude portrait, executed in oil on canvas.

A seated nude is depicted against a wonderfully painted backdrop. With her head resting on her hand, she is in a pensive pose, deep in thought.

At first glance, this semi-abstracted depiction of the nude figure may seem simple, but as we spend time to look at the colours and brushstrokes, we soon realise its complexity.

Using a wide array of colours including darker pastel shades and nude tones, the artist displays an excellent understanding of colour theory as layers and pairs of contrasting shades sit beside and on top of one another, blending together effortlessly and harmoniously.

The painting is composed with swatches of colours, each brushstroke executed back and forth with so much vigour and zest, almost a projection of the artist’s or the nude’s inner emotional state.

This oil on canvas sits in a beautiful gilt frame with an inner dark wood window as well as linen lining. The colours of the frame complement the painting extremely well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Surrealist Still Life

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed still life in pastel, beautifully presented in a black card mount and a silver frame.

The style of the pastel drawing as well as the frame that it comes in are both typically ‘mid century modern’. Vibrant colours juxtapose against cast shadows, creating a sense of mystery within the picture. The objects pictured almost seem to carry personalities of their own that they have intentionally kept hidden. There is a cinematic and theatrical feel to this piece – a feeling that the objects have been grouped together on a stage, knowing that they are bring watched by us. The artist has chosen objects that have strong, clear, statement-like shapes, and has set them against a geometric background, drawing our attention to the lines and forms.

This pastel is framed in its original light silvery-gold frame , and is set behind glass. The pastel is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some minor scuffs which do not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Abstract Coast

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and gentle coastal landscape composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1953 on the reverse.

Executed in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has intentionally left details of the coastal landscape fairly obscure as he depicts two boats by the edge of a body of water, and a row of trees lining the coast in the background of the painting.

The composition has been skilfully reconstructed down to blocks of contrasting colours and brushstrokes. Using a restrained palette comprising darker and lighter shades of blue, green and brown, a combination of short and gentle brushstrokes have been used to paint the lighter shades of the sky and sea, and swift and expressive brushstrokes have been used to paint the darker shades of the trees, boats and land in the foreground. These contrasting tones and brushstrokes have been thoughtfully executed to demonstrate depth to the painting. Overall, this restful composition has a very calming quality, and can add a soothing effect to any interior space.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with linen outer border and an inner gilt window. There are minor scuffs to the frame, but overall the painting and frame are both in very good vintage condition.

  • Charming Town

    Sold

    SOLD.

  • Cubist Figures

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very unique mid century portrait, painted in oil onto canvas.

Cubist in nature, the artist has taken an interesting perspective in the portrayal of two figures. Their forms have been flattened, and the painting has a strong focus on line, pattern, colour and angular shapes.

Through the use of distinct and repeated brushstrokes in one particular direction, the artist has used flat angular shapes to represent the different sides of the figures to suggest their three-dimensional structures.

Through the use of a monochromatic palette with unique hints of blue and brown, the tonal gradation from darker moody tones to lighter shades as well as the use of bold outlines also allows the figures to be more three dimensional.

This oil on canvas is housed in a light blue painted distressed frame that suits the painting wonderfully. There is some scattered craquelure present as shown but the paint layer is stable overall. There are minor scuffs to the frame which is in keeping with the style. • The Island

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and highly textured mid-century abstract modernist composition, executed in oil onto board.

This abstract composition blurs the boundary between painting and sculpture, with its three dimensional surface protruding from the board. A series grooves and and lines have been etched into the thickly painted surface, which features an array of thoughtfully arranged geometric shapes in rich and lively colours. The grooves and lines almost resemble threads, almost as though the surface has been embroidered. The artist has clearly pushed the medium to its limits, experimenting with several textural effects.

Although abstract in nature, the artwork could perhaps resemble an island with areas of land, mountains and sea.

With its focus on the beauty of colour, line, texture, brushstrokes, shapes and patterns, this intriguing and very energetic artwork would make for an excellent statement piece in any interior. Its punch of colour and sculptural qualities are a visual feast for the eyes.

  • Forest

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and textured mid century abstract modernist oil composition, painted in 1964.

Titled ‘Forest (Movement through Forest)’, it gives us wonderful insight into the artist’s source of inspiration. On the one hand, this piece is completely abstract and without its title, we might only see something non-representational. Here at The Discerning Palette, before translating the title, this piece reminded us of levels in an industrial building or something related to construction and the modern industrial world. The title added another layer of meaning to the piece, and opened our eyes to a different interpretation altogether. We were suddenly able to ‘see the wood through the trees’, pun intended.

Dynamic strokes criss-cross across the canvas in a myriad of angles and levels. Areas of impasto have been created to the thick application of paint, resulting in a piece full of texture and layers of blended and unblended colour.

This exceptional oil has been framed interestingly, with strips of  clear perspex fixed to the canvas edges. This gives a box like appearance to the piece, and adds to its ‘modern’ look. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame is missing a small corner to the lower right, as shown in the close ups. This missing corner is not obvious until looked at closely.

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and brilliantly executed modernist figurative oil portrait by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting depicts a silhouette of a female figure in yellow clothing, set against a light coloured background.

The facial features of the figure have been intentionally left out, focusing our appreciation on the qualities of colour, form, shape and brushstrokes.

Large swathes of rich and vivid colours have been applied to the canvas, creating areas of impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface. The artist has also wonderfully layered contrasting colours to reveal  great depth within this striking painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a silver frame with linen border. There is some light craquelure to the lower half of the painting, and an area of paint loss along the lower section, as shown in the close ups. Bold and deliberate brushstrokes have been confidently executed, capturing the energy and dynamism of the swinging acrobats.

  • The Pier

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large mid century modernist coastalscape, painted in oil onto canvas.

In this composition we see a long pier heading out towards the sea, with the backs of a figure and horse cart walking away from us. In the distance, a large cloud hangs over a ship, with streams of rain visible. The artist has used two thirds of the composition to paint the sky, yet there is real sense of the vastness of the coastal shoreline. The artist has carefully and delicately used the tip of his brush to paint in wonderful details – such as the little red bed sitting on the line between the poles, the horse drawn cart, the ship out at sea, as well as the lines showing the pouring rain in the distance. The artist has captured the essence of the coastal scene through his expressive yet considered brushwork, imbuing the painting with depth, movement, and tranquillity.

  • The Swimmers

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and very unique semi abstract mid century composition in oil, painted in 1962.

The scene appears to be of two swimmers, captured from a very interesting angle. It is almost as if we, the viewers, are under the water looking up at them. The two figures have just dived in, and we see the swoosh of the water and bubbles all around them.

The artist has left the composition very ‘open’, using broad and expressive brushstrokes to capture the effect of the moving water. The figures have also been paired right down, their bodies only partially visible.

The way the artist has depicted this scene is very inspiring – it is certainly not an easy scene to paint, and yet he has managed to put across the essence of what is at play here – the way the light hits the water and the figures, and the resulting distortions, as well as the sense of movement and air within the water.

This large oil on canvas is housed in a light frame with linen border. There are some minor scuffs to the frame, and some very slight age toning to the linen border. Overall the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Winter Houses

    Sold

    SOLD.

An atmospheric mid 20th century modernist street scene landscape composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The painting presents a winter scene, where coloured houses and trees are spread across a snow covered neighbourhood.

The artist has used a combination of muted and subdued colour palette as well as painterly textured brushstrokes –  wonderfully adding a raw textural quality and capturing the chilly and mellow essence of winter.

This oil on canvas is housed in a beautiful wood frame with an inner gilt and linen lining. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 49 x 75 cm (including frame)
