    Reminiscent of still lifes by the well known painter Vincent Van Gogh, this floral oil also features similar characteristics such as the vibrant contrasts of complementary colours, and short and swift expressive brushwork. In this picture, we see a bouquet of dahlias sitting in an aquamarine vase, and behind that sits a green leaved potted plant. On the bottom right, a small bowl punctuates and balances out the composition. Studying the painting up close, we can see how the artist has used criss-cross brushwork to create depth and three dimensionality, as well as capture the effects of light. There is a wonderful sense of movement and dynamism in the picture. and it would make a striking addition to an interior space.

    Measuring over a metre in both width and length, this very large abstract oil composition would certainly make for a statement piece in any interior.

    The painting features large planes of colour, in a very calming palette of blue, grey, brown, white and black. As you study the painting closely, you begin to notice pops of colour within and amongst the sections, such as green, orange and red. The painting is incredibly textured, and features several areas of impasto (where the paint is applied so thickly it stands proud from the surface).  We get a sense of the artist’s movement as he or she works her way across the canvas, moving left and right and up and down. The blocks of colour have been applied in a very considered way, resulting in a very well balanced composition that is very pleasing on the eye.

    Darker muted colours of green, yellow and blue that have been used to depict the cliffs with lush greenery dominate the right side of the painting, and lighter pastel shades of blues and beige depicting the water, sky and sand fill the left side of the painting.     With its non-representational and spontaneous appearance, the work is composed with elements of colour, shape, line and form.

    Painterly fluid lines, swift brushstrokes and dabs as well as geometric and amorphous shapes have been repurposed to form this striking cohesive work of art.

    Using an array of warm and inviting earth-tone colours of brown, orange and red, the artist has skilfully distributed and layered the lighter and darker tones – making the overall work very well-balanced.

    The surface of the painting has also been coated with a layer of varnish. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork.

    This oil on board is housed in a charcoal grey wood frame with an inner silver window. There is a small area of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint, commensurate with its age) on the top left of the painting, as well as a scuff in the middle. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring.
