Coastal Cliff
SOLD.
A large and tranquil mid-century modernist coastal scape composition painted in 1957 and executed in oil onto canvas.
In this picturesque scene of cliffs by a coast, the artist has made a conscious decision not to focus on realistic details and has reconstructed this composition by reducing the forms down to coloured angular shapes with dark lines as well as painterly brushstrokes.
Darker muted colours of green, yellow and blue that have been used to depict the cliffs with lush greenery dominate the right side of the painting, and lighter pastel shades of blues and beige depicting the water, sky and sand fill the left side of the painting. The combination of the muted and pastel shades add a very calming and soothing effect to the painting.
This large painting is housed in a stunning frame with visible grain, and has an inner gilt as well as linen lining. There are 2 tiny spots of paint loss to the left side of the work, but overall, the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
