A captivating mid-century modernist style still life composition, executed in oil and dated 1957.

The subject matter includes a black bird with a vibrant red-and-purple tail perched on a pedestal, alongside a fruit arrangement of oranges and an apple set on a decorative dish. The background consists of muted tones, with one half showing a flat pinkish colour and the other featuring parallel lines, possibly suggesting a wall or curtain.

Modernist in its ethos, the painting has a focus on flatness, bold outlines, and simplified shapes. The artist has used a muted palette dominated by shades of pinks, greens, browns, and greys, that imbue the work with a soothing quality.

Furthermore, by leaving areas of the canvas exposed, the artist’s creative use of negative space accentuates the shapes of the objects, drawing our attention to their distinct forms.
