A quirky mid century modernist still life oil composition, painted onto board in 1964.
This still life features odd angles and skewed perspective, asking us to look and look again. The composition carries many little playful details that are fun to explore and discover. Everything about its layout is somewhat stilted and skewed, for example the table sits at an angle where technically everything should slide off it, and the table is not quite rectangular. The shadows of the objects don’t quite fit either. The floor boards that sit below the table are in a different colour at every section, representing the way the light hits the floor differently. The top edge of the window sits at an angle that is not in line with the curtain rod above. Very interestingly, out the window we see a wall that has a arched shape exit where we can see the view of the seascape beyond. There are more details to discover, but all in all this surreal still life carries so many interesting features that are a delight.

Flat planes of colour in a myriad of angles create this very distinctly modernist interior. The traditional method of using perspective to create depth has been intentionally ignored, with the artist focusing instead on using complementary colours and geometric shapes to create a sense of space. The artist has very interestingly concentrated these formal qualities on the surfaces of the interior and its background, but has painted the objects portrayed within the interior in a much more detailed manner. The vase of flowers on the table with the bottles as well a the chair carry a different and more detailed style, which contrasts very well with the more angular shapes of the floor, walls and the view that continues outside.

This moody, expressionist painting features an array of textured detailing, showing off the artist’s mastery of the medium. Notwithstanding the dark and deep colour palette, the artist has skilfully created several layers of blended colour that give the painting an illumination from within that was hard to capture in the photos and is much more pertinent in real life. There is a glow from the painting that suggests that the scene is of sunset, just before the landscape loses its light completely. We love the little details such as the textured dots of pink applied to the lower half of the composition, alluding to little flowers in the grassy meadow.

A large and striking mid century abstract oil, painted onto jute canvas (also known as hessian or burlap) which has been laid down to board.
The jute canvas on which the oil has been applied has an extra rough texture and a pronounced weave, imbuing the piece with a raw and unfinished quality that makes it very striking. The artist has intentionally incorporated the texture of the jute to its overall effect, even leaving the edges unpainted to allow it to show through. This is especially wonderful as it also gives us an insight into the artist’s process – we can feel every brush-drag, and view the base layers of paint he has used. Under the paint we are able to see the grid-like weave of the jute, as well as where the artist’s brush has skipped over its bumps, and the areas where layers of paint have built up on the high points of the weave.
In addition to its raw quality, the painting has a luminosity that makes it very striking. Deep and rich colours have been set against the background of white, causing them to be even more pronounced. Bold outlines and distinct brushstrokes add a sense of dynamism, and geometric shapes layered one above the other give an unmistakable nod to the cubist movement.

Darker muted colours of green, yellow and blue that have been used to depict the cliffs with lush greenery dominate the right side of the painting, and lighter pastel shades of blues and beige depicting the water, sky and sand fill the left side of the painting.
