A captivating abstract work of art that explores the flow of brushstrokes and colours in arrested motion.

Swift, confident and fluid strokes and splashes of paint fill the canvas with energy, giving it a wonderful texture and three-dimensional feel. Although there is a distinct sense of spontaneity in the overall composition,  the application has been executed in a controlled and intentional manner.

This acrylic & mixed media on canvas is housed in a complementary silver floater frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Figure in Pastel

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An excellently executed nude figure study in pastel, framed behind glass.

This nude study captures the female form elegantly and expressively. The artist has used long, narrow lines to outline the form, and used hatching to capture the three dimensionality of the  form of the body, giving the drawing a sculptural quality. A different technique has been used to fill in the background – it seems the artist has used the pastel to colour over a textured surface to create a dappled effect.

The pastel has been beautifully framed in a wood and gilt frame, and is set behind glass to protect the vulnerability of the medium. Both pastel and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Figures at a Pier

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and brilliantly executed mid century cubist composition in oil, painted in 1957 by well known artist Ivar Morsing.

In typical Morsing style, he has chosen to focus on formal qualities of line, shape, form and colour. He creates beautiful harmony on the canvas, applying contrasting blocks of saturated colour to the surface, illustrating his cubist influences which he is most known for. Strong, rich, and vivid colours of orange, red and white are set against a sky blue. The chosen palette and the was he has placed the complementary colours gives each shade and tone its own prominence.

This stunning oil on board is housed in its original mid century wood frame with an inner linen lining. The painting is in very good vintage condition, and there are some age spots and scuffs on the frame.

A very bright and striking mid century abstract modernist composition in oil, painted onto board.

Dynamic strokes of layered colour create this painting full of depth and detail. The artist pours expressive emotion onto the canvas, resulting in this abstract expressionist composition that is very striking. The painting features several areas of impasto, where we see thickly applied paint and distinct brushstrokes, giving us a sense of the artist’s gestural movements.

  • Indefinite

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An expressive and well-executed abstract composition, executed in oil in 1960.

With its non-representational and spontaneous appearance, the work is composed with elements of colour, shape, line and form.

Painterly fluid lines, swift brushstrokes and dabs as well as geometric and amorphous shapes have been repurposed to form this striking cohesive work of art.

Using an array of warm and inviting earth-tone colours of brown, orange and red, the artist has skilfully distributed and layered the lighter and darker tones – making the overall work very well-balanced.

The surface of the painting has also been coated with a layer of varnish. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork.

This oil on board is housed in a charcoal grey wood frame with an inner silver window. There is a small area of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint, commensurate with its age) on the top left of the painting, as well as a scuff in the middle. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. As with the frame, there are minor scuffs and a small area of paint loss on the bottom left, as shown in the images.

Do note that some glare is evident in the photograph due to the varnish on the picture.

    Size: 56 x 75.5 cm (including frame)

  • Ladies Lunch

    Sold

    SOLD.

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A striking and brilliantly mid century cubist composition in oil, painted onto board.

This painting depicts two female figures seated at a balcony table, with a jug and two glasses in front of them. Beyond the balcony is an ocean view with the setting sun.

The artist has reduced the scene down to its formal qualities, focusing on shape, line, pattern and colour. The figures and the scene surrounding them have been painted from multiple angles under a cubist ethos, resulting in a composition that appears fragmented and abstracted. The artist has also restricted his colour palette, using a majority of vivid red, brown, white and orange in different tones. Notwithstanding the fragmentation and palette, the painting is wonderfully balanced and sings with harmony.

This piece would make a very striking addition to any interior and would be a real statement piece.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some damage to the inner section of its lower right corner, as shown in the close up photos.

    Size: 50 x 86 cm (including frame)

  • Lady in Blue

    Sold

    SOLD.

A fun and playful cubist line portrait composition in oil, painted in 1975.

The female figure’s form has been rapidly distilled into lines of dynamic shape and movement. A style of drawing /painting used by artists like Picasso and Matisse, line art is a tool for the artist to work out complicated ideas, crystallising them with brilliant virtuosity into linear form. Today the influence of line art is everywhere and can be regarded as one of the fundaments of an almost infinitely versatile graphic language. It can be seen not only in the works of countless artists, but also in graphic design, advertising, animation, and equally at home in a viral gif, on a billboard or in museums or galleries.

Here the artist has also condensed his palette down very effectively into shades of one colour – blue. Beyond the black outline, the picture retains its sense of depth and space through the skilful use of the varying gradients of blue.

This painting is housed in a simple silver frame that suits it very well, and is in very good vintage condition. There are some minor scuffs to the frame which do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • Monument

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A striking scene of two figures in a continental town square surrounded by landmarks, painted in oil onto board. This painting has been worked in the ‘post impressionist’ style,  characterised by strong colours and fierce brushwork. We see loose dabs of the brush, painted in non-naturalistic colours. The artist has chosen not to paint the town scene as it appears in reality, but has instead imbued with an energy, light, and dynamism that shows off his or her emotional connection with the townscape. The town appears quiet, with only two figures visible, but the artist has painted the architecture surrounding them with such vigour that they carry life and energy of their own.

This oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in an original gilt frame with an inner linen and white border. The frame has some marks and scuffs (as seen in the photos)

  • Mountains

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very striking mid century abstract modernist oil on canvas, painted in 1955.

Blocks of colour skilfully contrasted against each other create a sense of depth and space. The artist has reduced what appears to be a mountainous landscape down to an abstract layout of coloured blocks, focussing on form, shape, pattern and line. We can almost feel the artist at work – creamy layers of paint applied with his brush, one stroke at a time, his wrist moving in a series of angles.  Punches of strong, deep colour juxtapose against lighter, creamier, areas. This painting is  indeed a very satisfying one to appreciate.

The painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame, which suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffs but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Ruby Cottage

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A compelling mid century oil on canvas, painted in 1937.

The artist has used a wonderfully earthy and rich colour palette to depict this rural landscape, punctuated by rusty red cottages. A group of trees focus the eye to the centre of the picture, while melting snow on the ground encourages our yes to move around the painting and discover further details.  Expressive brushstrokes and a coarse texture add to the earthiness of the picture, and skilfully convey the character of the landscape and its rustic nature.

The painting is housed in its original mid century distressed frame, with gilt outlining. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Still Life with Lemons

    Sold

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A brilliantly executed mid century still life composition in oil, painted in 1962.

This still life features a beautifully textured surface, with the artist using very thickly applied layers of paint to create areas of impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface. In this composition, we are able to discern a group of lemons and limes in a white bowl, but the artist has left out realistic detailing, focusing instead on the texture and colour of the objects and background. There is a deliciousness and tactility to the creaminess of the thick paint, almost as if the artist is using the medium of paint itself to capture taste and texture of the pictured fruit.

This painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame which suits it very well. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • The Trio

    Sold

The artist displays his artistic talents – playing around with form, geometric shapes, colour as well as the application of paint – to make this painting a visual feast for the eyes.

Blocks of light pastel colours have been skilfully applied onto the canvas through the use of a palette knife. This not only creates a smooth and creamy texture, but the way the layering and blending of colours have been revealed adds an element of depth and charm.

This striking oil on canvas is housed in a thin light grey frame that complements the work very well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A small but very striking and expressive portrait in oil, painted on board and mounted within a frame.

  • Smile

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A wonderfully fun and playful original artist’s proof lithograph, signed by Leif Sylvester and inscribed ‘E.A’ (épreuve d’artiste) to the bottom.

An artist proof print has a connection to limited edition prints. These prints are used as a test print by the artist and kept for their personal collection. Traditionally the artist would take the proof straight off the printing press and amend the colours and quality. Then, once the artist was happy with the proof, they would then proceed with the limited edition print.

Artist Proofs are generally valued higher than other prints in the edition, due to the rarity and small quantity of them. Oftentimes the Artist Proof are altered from the final edition, creating a uniqueness to them that is very desirable.

This lithograph is housed behind glass in a complementary silver frame. Both print and frame are in good vintage condition.

Despite the majority of the composition being painted in yellow, the artist skilfully shows us how just one colour in varying tones and shades can still provide so much depth and interest. • Knitting

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautiful and atmospheric mid century oil portrait , painted onto canvas. An elderly lady sits on a chair on a balcony, with a wicker basket by her feet, quietly knitting away. The artist has used a calm, soft colour palette to create this tranquil picture, and distinct and broad brushstrokes give it depth and texture. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on form, line, shape and colour.

This oil on board is housed in its original cream and silver frame with an inner fabric lined border, which suits this painting perfectly and really brings out its palette. The painting has an area of craquelure to the top right section, but overall the paint layer is stable. Cracks forming within the paint layer is natural as the paint starts to age. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. Overall it is in good condition. There is a small loss to the upper left corner of the frame (as shown in photos) but again this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the painting.

  • The Garden

    Sold

Free UK, Europe and Singapore shipping.

A brilliantly executed mid century cubist landscape in oil, painted in 1957.

We can just about make out a group of houses or sheds with a garden in front of it, but this view has been reduced and flattened down into abstract blocks of colour. Rather than painting the view before him in realistic detail, the artist has chosen to focus instead on the formal qualities of the landscape, such as colour, line, shape, form and pattern. With expressive brushwork, the artist has skilfully used colour theory and has applied a myriad of colours that contrast but harmonise at the same time.

This very well executed painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame with an inner linen lined border. The painting is in very good condition. There is some age wear present to the frame.
