Sunlit Garden

A vibrant and lively mid-century modernist style landscape oil painting by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The composition captures a serene garden scene bathed in warm sunlight. A female figure in a flowing orange dress tends to the lush greenery with a gentle rake, while dappled shadows from towering trees create a dynamic interplay of light and shade. A white chair sits invitingly in the foreground, adding a quiet moment of rest to the composition.

The painting is executed in a modernist style, and there is a strong focus on saturated colours as well as bold, expressive brushstrokes.

The artist has used a rich palette dominated by fresh greens, contrasted with pops of orange, cream and browns.

The foliage is depicted with loose, rounded strokes, giving the trees a rhythmic, almost abstract quality. The brushwork is confident and textured, capturing the movement of light across the landscape.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffing.
