  • Grounded in Nature

    Sold

    SOLD.

A tranquil and atmospheric mid-century modernist landscape composition, that wonderfully captures the beauty and harmony in nature. It has been executed in oil onto board, and signed by Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984) whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.

The use of a rich and earthy colour palette dominates this painting, as it features a brown terrain landscape with touches of lush greenery. Painted in a semi-abstract manner, all realistic details have been omitted, and the artist’s painterly approach is evident in the textured and expressive brushstrokes that vary in thickness and direction. Shades of brown and green have been meticulously layered and strategically placed to create depth and add a tactile quality to the painting.

An expansive blue cloudy sky fills the upper portion of the composition, juxtaposing the earthy tones of the terrain landscape beneath. • Outing

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very lively and playful mid century modernist figure scene, painted in oil onto board by the established female Swedish artist Brita Hansson (1918-1979).

In this vivid and richly coloured composition, a group of figures are depicted gathered together, and are set against a brightly painted background. There is an area of blue in the background of the painting, which possibly alludes to a body of water, suggesting that the figures are by the beach.

Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has thoughtfully chosen not to reveal the details of the figures, and has instead simplified and abstracted them down to painterly and expressive brushstrokes as well as blocks of contrasting saturated colours.

This oil is painted onto thick canvas paper laid to board and is housed in a gilt frame with linen border. There is some craquelure present, mainly to the left hand side as shown in the close ups, but the paint layer is stable. • Prep

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but very interesting composition of two figures in an interior, painted in oil onto board.

We have not been able to quite put a finger on what the two figures are doing – they look like they could be drying out something, given the firewood in the picture, or perhaps they are weaving with a loom in front of the seated figure. A large bag of logs sits to the right of the picture, a pair of barrels can be seen to the left, and wooden beams run across the roof. The picture has a lovely homely feel, with an earthy palette of browns and greens. There is an array of detail, which makes it very interesting puzzle to try and work out. If anyone has a clear idea of what the scene is of, we’d be very grateful if you could drop us a message letting us know what you think it is and why!

The painting is housed in a gilt frame which illuminates the picture wonderfully. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Set of 4 Oils

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but powerful set of abstract compositions by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted with oil onto linen panel. Each one signed, titled and dated on reverse.

Central to these paintings are an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

All paintings and frames in excellent condition. Each one of these is a one-off unique hand painted piece, so the set of 4 will be available until any one of the pieces is purchased individually. If you prefer to buy an individual piece, you can do so here.

Lloyd Durling is a British artist working in London. His practice is painting-based and he has exhibited widely throughout Europe, U.S.A and Asia. In 2017 he was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Works are held in both public and private collections worldwide.

A large, beautiful and subtle abstract figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

Abstract in nature, the forms in the composition are not clearly defined but our interpretation discerns a standing male figure embracing a female figure.

The artist has worked with a subdued and muted colour palette that instils a soothing quality to the painting. There is a beautiful transition from darker shades of blue and grey to lighter shades of cream and grey. Distinct energetic brushstrokes fill the canvas, adding an expressive effect and a wonderful textural quality to the painting.

  • Through the Trees

    Sold

    SOLD.

    Free UK Shipping.

A very large and textured semi abstract mid century landscape composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

This modernist landscape features several areas of heavy impasto where the paint has been applied very generously, giving this painting a wonderful depth with several layers. Though the palette is fairly minimal, the artist has managed to capture the essence of this wintery wooded landscape, giving the impression of a very far reaching landscape. There is almost a mirror like effect, where the colours used for the sky are repeated on the trees and the ground, creating a very harmonious composition. The slim white birch trees stand vertically upright across the scene, juxtaposing the largely horizontal brushwork that has been used.

The painting is house in a linen lined frame with an inner silver border, which suits the painting impeccably. The canvas has a small closed tear to the upper edge, as seen in photos. This has been restored from the reverse and as such is not obvious on the front. There is slight age toning to the top left corner of the frame.

  • Abstract Collage

    Sold

    SOLD.

A unique and intriguing abstract figurative composition dated 1976, that employs a combination of oil and collage techniques.

Executed in an abstract manner, the artwork portrays a figure with his hands raised by his face, and is brimming with expressive energy.  Rich colours of red, blue, and yellow have been executed with broad and bold brushstrokes, conveying a sense of emotional depth.

In addition to the application of oil, the artist has incorporated collage elements into the composition. Stripes of paper, carefully selected and arranged, intersect and intertwine with the painted surface. These collaged elements create a sense of depth as well as a textural quality, further enhancing the visual impact of the artwork.

This mixed media on card is housed in a bright gold frame with gold inner border. There is a small loss to the lower right corner of the frame, but overall the appearance is very good. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.

  • Abstract in Blue

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small yet very impactful mixed media composition with abstract qualities.

Painted in a semi-abstract manner and with a strong focus on colour and brushwork, we can perhaps make out what appears to be three figures crossing a bridge over a body of water.

Although the artist has worked with a restrained colour palette, the intense use of blue that takes up the centre of the painting is the most prominent colour that commands our attention.

Long sweeping brushstrokes have been rhythmically executed, and overall the painting is very well balanced and evokes a very satisfying sense of calm.

This is a mixed media on board, consisting pastel, gouache, watercolour and oil. Both the painting and frame are both in very good vintage condition. The painting is housed behind glass.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

    Size: 20 x 15 cm (including frame)
