An engaging abstract composition by contemporary British artist Frances Daws, executed in acrylic onto board and dated 2024.
This painting captures the colours and feelings of walking through the English village of Lacock, a walk Frances does regularly, past the darting house martins down east street, onto the ford and adjacent stream, tops dipping into the water, many attempting to walk over the slippery stones, up the hill and over the top field with views of lush countryside ahead.

  • Whispers of Autumn

    Whispers of Autumn

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid-century abstract landscape painting that captures the essence of a fleeting autumn moment through expressive, bold brushstrokes and a rich, earthy colour palette, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1963.

The composition centres on a striking, stylized tree with vibrant orange foliage, leaning slightly as if swayed by the wind. The background features deep green and muted brown hues, creating a sense of depth and grounding the scene in a natural setting. A hint of light cream in the centre suggests sunlight filtering through the foliage, adding a subtle glow.

  • Cubist Study

    Cubist Study

    Sold

    SOLD

A large, striking and brilliantly executed mid-century cubist figurative oil portrait, painted by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

The painting depicts a simplified human figure dressed in an orange attire, in a seated position with her hands clasped in front.

Drawing inspiration from elements of cubism and geometric abstraction, the artist has masterfully flattened and fragmented the composition down to distinct geometric planes and angular shapes that interact with one another. Each respective shape seems to occupy its own distinct space, yet together they form a cohesive and harmonious whole.

The colour palette is consists of bold orange and a mix of muted shades including light terracotta, beige, and grey-blue, with occasional accents of black and cream. The blocks of colour are cleanly defined, yet they transition fluidly into one another, avoiding harsh contrasts. The contrasting darker and lighter tones highlights the three-dimensional qualities of the figure and surrounding, whilst simultaneously emphasising the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas.

The brushstrokes are smooth with subtle textural variations. Each stroke is deliberate and calculated, reinforcing the angular, segmented forms of the composition.

This large oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame that has been painted white. The painting has a very small area of paint loss at its lower left, as shown in close up. The frame has areas of paint loss.

  • Edges of Dusk

    Edges of Dusk

    Sold

    SOLD

A minimalistic mid-century modernist painting that captures a quiet, geometric landscape rendered with bold simplicity and thoughtful abstraction, painted in oil onto board.

At its center, a sharply angled white structure – perhaps a barn or house – emerges between two looming, almost silhouetted trees. A small blue-and-white striped form in the foreground, possibly a bench, adds a playful pop of colour and contrast.

Modernist in its ethos, the painting embraces geometric abstraction as the artist has omitted all realistic details and has used flat planes of colour and a minimalistic approach to suggest depth and form.

The palette is dominated by deep greens, blacks, and subdued greys, evoking a moody, almost twilight ambiance. The stark white of the roof and the sharp blue accents add both contrast and focal interest.

Thick, expressive brushstrokes are visible throughout, especially in the trees and background areas. These textured strokes bring a sense of movement and energy to the otherwise calm and structured scene, grounding the abstraction in tactile, painterly technique.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen lining. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very minor scuffs at its corners.

  • Geometry in Balance

    Geometry in Balance

    Sold

    SOLD

A mid-century geometric abstract painting that features a minimalist composition of overlapping rectangular forms, presented in a balanced and structured arrangement, executed in oil onto board.

The artwork is divided vertically into two contrasting sections: a light, off-white area on the left and a dark, charcoal-black area on the right. The primary geometric shapes include a series of coloured rectangles stacked on a horizontal black base. On the left side, a small yellow rectangle partially overlaps with a green rectangle, adjacent to a slightly larger blue rectangle. On the right side, a dominant red rectangle stands tall, partially obscuring a dark green rectangle at its base. The overlapping of colours and shapes creates a sense of depth and spatial interaction.

The colours used are bold and primary: red, blue, yellow, and green, with neutral black, white, and grey tones as background elements. The brushstrokes are varied – smooth strokes fill the background, and more expressive stokes with visible texture have been used to paint the shapes.

    Shape & Form

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed 1959 abstract composition painted in oil onto canvas, painted by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

Here we have an abstract composition with a structured, geometric arrangement of shapes in a muted colour palette.

The artwork leans towards abstract geometric art with an architectural quality. It features rectangular and curved forms that overlap and interact, creating a sense of balance and depth. The shapes resemble furniture or interior elements, possibly suggesting a still life or interior scene in an abstracted manner.

The painting uses soft, neutral tones of beige, cream, pale blue, and muted pastels, contrasted with darker accents in deep brown, black, and a bold teal rectangle at the top. The subtle use of pink and red hints at warmth within the composition.

  • Standing Form

    Standing Form

    Sold

    SOLD

An evocative mid-century modernist abstract painting that presents a standing human figure that has been deconstructed into geometric and organic forms.

The artist has used a mixed-media approach to create a textured, layered composition, evoking a sense of depth and contemplation. Executed in an abstract figurative style, the composition features dynamic brushstrokes that shift between structured, block-like applications of paint and fluid, gestural marks. The juxtaposition of hard-edged forms with softer, blended areas enhances the painting’s sense of movement and spatial ambiguity. The overall effect is both contemplative and expressive, making it a compelling piece.

  • The Blue Vest

    The Blue Vest

    Sold

    SOLD

An excellently executed modernist oil on canvas, painted by Bo Hultén (b.1945), whose works have been presented in the Modern Museum of Art, and the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm. His work is also presented at the Gripsholm Gallery in Stockholm and the Municipal Museum in Malmö

This painting by Bo Hultén is a relatively early work. His style is reminiscent of the modernist tradition in which figures are deconstructed into basic shapes and surfaces. The geometric structure has parallels to Cubism and Post-Cubism, in which volumes and perspectives dissolve into flat fields of colour. The face is anonymous and unspecified, which enhances the abstract expression and directs the viewer’s focus to the shapes of the body and the colour composition.

The blue garment in the centre acts as a central colour point, while the dark and light contrasts create a balanced composition. The orange element in the lower left corner breaks off and adds dynamism to the painting. The background is minimalist and neutral, which makes the figure appear more clearly.

Hultén’s work can be placed within Scandinavian modernism, where an austere but poetic simplicity often occurs. His way of simplifying human figures into almost iconic forms is reminiscent of artists such as Fernand Léger or Swedish modernists such as Olle Bærtling (although Bærtling was more pronounced abstract).

The painting is presented in a wood frame which suits it perfectly. There are some marks and general age wear to painting, but it is in good condition overall. The frame has some scuffs, but is also in good condition.

  • Figures in a Dream

    Figures in a Dream

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed abstract composition drawn in biro onto paper, by British artist Enos Lovatt (1937-2018).

This intricate composition has a dynamic, surreal quality, filled with abstract forms and stylised figures. The cross-hatching and dense linework typical of biro drawings are skilfully used to create depth, contrast, and texture. The artist plays with positive and negative space, using white areas effectively to highlight the main forms amidst the dark, densely filled background.

The drawing has strong influences from Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, with its dream-like imagery and focus on fluidity, symbolism, and subconscious forms. There’s a sense of narrative, though it remains open-ended and abstract, encouraging personal interpretation.

Overall, the piece is bold, intricate, and highly textured, showcasing the meticulous potential of the humble biro pen in the hands of a skilled artist.

Both the drawing and frame are in excellent vintage condition. The painting is presented within a card mount and a stained black wooden frame, and is protected behind perspex.

Enos Lovatt (1937–2018) studied at Burslem School of Art and the Royal College of Art (1959–1962) before becoming Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Staffordshire Polytechnic until 1992. A prolific artist, he worked in oils, gouache, acrylics, ceramics, and biro, leaving behind thousands of works. He exhibited sporadically, including solo shows in City Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, one man shows at the Paton and Woodstock Galleries in London and at Stafford Museum and Art Gallery.

In the early 1990s, Enos lost most of the three middle fingers on his dominant right hand in a lawnmower accident. The biros allowed him to navigate his vivid and unique imagination and bring the thoughts and images in his head to life in their purest form of magic realism. This drawing was created in the early 2000s.

    Sold

    SOLD

A bold and striking mid century modernist interior scene, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1954 by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

This painting depicts an interior scene rendered in a bold, geometric, and abstracted style. The focus is on simplified shapes, structured composition, and a muted, earthy color palette.

The central element of the painting is a large, dark table, with angular lines and panels of brown, beige, and black. Surrounding the table are walls, doors, and furniture, abstractly represented through flattened planes and geometric forms. The space is framed by dark doorways, rectangular wall panels, and a doorway with a visible brown door.

The perspective is intentionally distorted and angular, creating a slightly cubist, modernist feel. The painting emphasizes structure and form, reducing details in favour of simplified and abstracted shapes.

This artwork captures a quiet, introspective interior scene through an abstracted and geometric lens. The angular forms, muted tones, and simplified details create a sense of stillness and structure. It reflects a modernist approach to interior spaces, focusing on the interplay of shape, line, and muted colour. The deliberate distortion and abstraction invite the viewer to engage with the composition’s architectural and emotional depth.

The oil on canvas is framed in a simple, light-coloured wooden frame that aligns with the minimalist, modernist aesthetic of the painting. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some scuffing and slight age toning, but is in good condition overall.
