  • Figures in Colour

    Sold

    SOLD.

A playful and striking composition presenting 2 figures in a coloured backdrop, brilliantly executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1951.

Painted with a modernist ethos and containing elements of geometric abstraction, the artist has reconstructed the scene down to flat geometric shapes in contrasting colours to demonstrate a sense of depth, as well as bold outlines to highlight and emphasise form.

The painting is brimming with character as it contains a burst of lively colours, energetic brushstrokes, and the artist has interestingly used the reverse end of the brush handle to reveal areas of the canvas.

This oil on canvas is housed in a wide-profiled cream frame that has an intended distressed effect, as show in close ups. There are areas of ‘paint loss’ to the edges of the frame but we believe this to be part of the intended effect.  The lines to the left and right of the frame are where the joints of the frame meet, as shown on reverse. There is a small repair  to the top of the frame, as shown in close ups. However, it does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. The painting is in very good vintage condition.

  • Fragments

    Sold

    SOLD.

An outstanding geometric abstract mid-century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The painting presents a central figure, and it embodies the essence of a modernist aesthetic with its unique approach to depicting the human form.

Employing elements of geometric abstraction,  the artist has skilfully deconstructed the figure and the background, reducing it down into fragmented shapes. Although each block appears to be composed of a distinct hue, it is evident that the artist has layered contrasting colours in some of the blocks to reveal interest. The different shapes have been carefully juxtaposed against one another, creating a wonderful interplay of colours that heightens the visual impact of the composition, whilst inviting the viewer to contemplate the essence of the human form and the interplay between individual elements that comprise our identity.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim wood frame. Both the painting and frame have some very minor signs of ageing commensurate with age, and this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Misty Window

    Sold

    SOLD.

A simple composition with a strikingly modernist ethos. Here the landscape has been reduced down to basic colour and paint markings. The artist is clearly not trying to mimic real life, and has chosen instead draw attention to the fact that this is his own rendition of the elements of the landscape. There is a distinct rawness to the painting – the artist has not hidden the strokes of the paint brush, or the background of the substrate he is working on, nor has he masked the way in which he has rendered the rocks and trees with his cross hatching technique.

  • Pink District

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but powerful abstract composition by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted with oil stick and graphite onto linen panel. Signed, titled and dated on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

    SOLD.

A large and brilliantly executed mid century modernist figure scene, painted in oil onto canvas by the established female artist Brita Hansson (1918-1979).

In this vivid and richly coloured composition, we see a group of figures gathered together, with one figure holding a baby. Beneath them are baskets on the floor. The artist’s free and imaginative use of colour is evident, beautifully capturing the sense that the artists are standing out in the hot sun in colourful dress.  The background is a grid like composition painted in orange, red and sandy brown tones, evoking a sense of arid plains heated under the sun. Using a combination of bold black outlines and planes of juxtaposing colours, the artist has achieved great depth and complexity to the composition, while maintaining a sense of playfulness and freedom within her palette.

  • Boat in Port

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very well executed mid century semi abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

Here we see a boat docked in front of a building, but the artist has chosen to focus on formal qualities such as form, shape, line and colour. Working under a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has very cleverly reduced the scene down to flat planes of colour, creating a cubist, geometric effect in the composition, bringing our attention to the fact that this is indeed a painting on a surface, shaped by the artist’s own view and perception, as opposed to a realistic depiction of a boat by a shed. Yet details like the stillness of the water, the reflection of the boat, and the structures involved are still so masterfully captured.

This oil painting is housed in a very well suited gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

Containing elements of fauvism and abstraction, this striking painting emphasises rich colourism, fierce brushwork and decorative pattern.

The artist has flattened the forms and has enhanced the colours of the natural world by using a restrained palette of vivid and saturated shades of blue, green and white. Distinct and energetic brushstrokes fill the painting with dabs of colours, and have been executed with great confidence and skill to add a wonderful textural quality and imbue the work with a sense of dynamism.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. the painting is in excellent vintage condition, and there are small losses and scuffs to the frame corners, as shown in photos.

    Size: 47 x 56 cm (including frame)
