  • Movement

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and very well executed abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

This abstract composition draws our attention to the inherent beauty in mark making and colour. There is a wonderfully balanced tension between control and looseness in the brushwork of the composition -the colours seem to flow effortlessly and yet the placement of each section and its movement is controlled and intentional. Varying shades of brown, orange and beige bring to mind raw natural elements such as rock, stone, and earth, so the composition could perhaps be inspired by this.

This large oil on canvas is housed in an original mid-century slim wooden frame which suits it perfectly. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

The artist has painted a broad, panoramic view of the rooftops of a coastal town, with the view of the sea in the distance. Flat planes of colour in broad and distinct brushstrokes have been juxtaposed one next to the other, creating a sense of space and depth within the picture, leading our eyes from the foreground (the roofs) to the background (the sea). This has also created a geometric effect which gives the painting an element of abstraction.

  • Studio Nude

    Sold

    SOLD.

An excellently executed mid century nude composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

The artist’s use of colour to create depth and contrast, his expressive and painterly brushwork, and the placement of each brushstroke and how it fits into the composition, are a showcase of his technical and artistic mastery. The composition is wonderfully balanced, with the perfect amount of negative space. A rich colour palette applied in long, broad brushstrokes draw our eye to the nude first. We explore the figure – angular and multidirectional brushstrokes that seem effortlessly applied have in fact been considered carefully, creating just the right amount of light and shade. The artist has left out realistic details of the figure’s body, and yet his allusions through the use of colour leave us perfectly content in knowing what we are looking at it – a fine example of his mastery with his medium and colour. The figure is set against rectangular blocks of colour which tease us into exploring the objects around the figure, while providing balance and harmony within the composition.

The painting is in very good vintage condition and is unframed. It can be hung as is, or set in a new frame. There is a lining around the edges of the stretcher from the previous frame which has worn over time (as shown in close ups), but this can be easily removed.

  • Cubist Figure

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and brilliantly executed mid century cubist figure composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

Reminiscent of cubist works by Pablo Picasso, this painting also features fragmentation and abstraction. By breaking the figure and the interior scene down into distinct areas, the artist shows us different view points at the same time and within the same space which suggests their three dimensional form.  Yet there is also an emphasis on the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas instead of creating the illusion of depth.

The painting is housed in a textured champagne and gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
