A large and outstanding mid-century modernist abstract figurative composition in oil, painted onto canvas by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting captures a tender moment between two figures, likely an adult and a child, engaged in a shared activity – perhaps reading – on a pale yellow surface held between them. The figures are rendered with bold black contour lines and simplified geometric forms, evoking a quiet intimacy and emotional restraint characteristic of modernist abstraction.

The palette is soft yet expressive, with cool mint green and powder blue balanced against pale yellow, white, and black. Textural brushwork adds depth, especially in the background and garment areas, where layers of impasto reveal the artist’s hand. The faceless figures and stylized forms invite universal interpretation, evoking themes of mentorship, learning, and companionship without prescribing a specific narrative.

Executed with a controlled yet expressive brush, this work speaks to the elegance of restraint – where every shape and colour block carries emotional weight.

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist abstract figurative composition, painted in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

This striking painting presents two simplified human forms suspended in a quiet, intimate exchange. One figure stands in soft green clothing, loosely holding a cluster of yellow flowers, while the other sits nearby, turned toward them in a moment that feels conversational. Their faces are intentionally undefined, reduced to smooth, pale planes.

Rendered in a distinctly modernist style, the painting embraces abstraction through flattened forms, pared-back anatomy, and a near-collage approach to composition. The figures are constructed with bold, interlocking shapes, their outlines subtly broken and reassembled with gestural marks that lend a sense of movement and quiet fragmentation.

The palette is dominated by layered greens – ranging from mint and sage to deeper teal – punctuated by fresh accents of lemon yellow, sky blue, and hints of charcoal and white. These colours create a luminous, almost sunlit atmosphere, evoking nature without depicting it literally.

Brushwork is confident: broad, matte planes of colour are interrupted by swift, expressive strokes and linear marks that cut across the surface. These gestural accents introduce rhythm and spontaneity, softening the otherwise graphic structure and adding depth to the composition.

Altogether, the piece captures a fleeting human connection – poised somewhere between stillness and conversation.

This oil on canvas is presented in a frame that features a slim profile with a soft, brushed gold finish. The painting is in good vintage condition overall. There are some light marks to the painting, most notably near the face of the figure on the right. The frame shows minor scuffing consistent with age.

  • Geometric Collage in Blues

    Geometric Collage in Blues

    Sold

    SOLD

A very unique original artwork by contemporary British artist Dave Boyd, which has been constructed from discarded books (repurposed cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards), and mounted on a wooden panel in a solid wood float frame.

At the heart of the artwork is a carefully balanced four-part composition, divided into squares, each containing a small vertical pairing of rectangular blocks. These central forms: composed of soft off-white, deep indigo, slate grey, and muted charcoal – echo one another subtly across the surface, creating a quiet rhythm and sense of repetition. The woven textures of the salvaged book cloth are beautifully visible within each element, offering gentle variation and tactility against the broader fields of colour.

The background is composed of softly shifting panels of various blues, each section bearing the marks of time through delicate abrasions, faint horizontal striations, and areas of tonal wear. Vertical and horizontal seams subtly divide the surface, reinforcing the constructed, assemblage nature of the work while adding depth and structure.

The composition feels contemplative and architectural: where repetition, balance, and materiality come together in a restrained yet deeply textural expression. There is a quiet dialogue between the squares, each echoing the other while retaining its own subtle tonal identity.

The artwork is presented in a warm-toned solid wood float frame with a rich grain that complements the cooler hues of the piece. It has been constructed with professional grade adhesive and is shipped with robust fixings, ready to hang. Both artwork and frame are in excellent condition.

Dave’s artistic practice focuses on the juxtaposition between the manmade and the natural and the human experience of geometric forms, surfaces and materials. Paintings and collages often embody a built or constructed aesthetic and are strongly influenced by architecture and the built environment, with the aim of suggesting visual encounters with structures and landscapes. Utilising and repurposing materials,  with a focus on minimal composition, surface and colour, Dave’s work seek to utilise the subtle marks inherent in objects that have been used and handled over many years.

To the left, several golden haystacks rise against the horizon, their rounded forms accented by loosely placed poles, hinting at agricultural life and seasonal rhythms. A  road leads the viewer’s eye into the middle distance, where a simple wooden gate opens toward a countryside beyond.

Executed in a restrained and muted palette, the composition reflects a serene pastoral atmosphere. The brushwork is gentle and impressionistic, with visible textures in the sky and fields that lend the painting a sense of movement and authenticity. Delicate textures in areas such as the haystacks and road adds tactile interest without overwhelming the tranquil mood.

  • Hillside Rhythm

    Hillside Rhythm

    Sold

    SOLD

A vibrant mid-century modernist landscape composition that captures an undulating terrain rendered in bold, sculptural brushstroke, and executed in oil onto canvas.

The scene is abstracted into rhythmic forms where rounded hilltops and faceted slopes are expressed through confident sweeps of the brush, giving the land a sense of movement and tactile energy.

The colour palette is rich – cool sage, olive, and moss greens intersect with muted stone greys and soft sky blues, creating a harmonious balance between earth and air. The sky is painted in a smooth gradient of pale blue, acting as a calm contrast to the dynamic, textured land below. Each stroke is deliberate and expressive, laid down with visible directionality, giving the impression of wind pushing across the hillsides.

Painted with an almost sculptural quality, the brushwork creates volume and light without relying on fine detail – typical of the mid-century Scandinavian modernist approach, where form and rhythm take precedence over realism.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame with an inner cream border. The painting itself is in very good vintage condition. The frame shows some age-related marks and has a section missing on the right side.

  • Reclining Figure in Red

    Reclining Figure in Red

    Sold

    SOLD

A compelling mid-century modernist abstract figurative composition, painted in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting captures the essence of the human form through a language of bold reduction and tactile surface. A reclining figure emerges from the composition, its contours simplified into rounded, interlocking shapes that suggest the curve of a shoulder, the bend of a hip, and the quiet weight of a resting body. The figure feels both present and elusive – more sensed than precisely defined – inviting the viewer to complete the form through perception.

The style is distinctly modernist, leaning into abstraction while retaining a strong figurative anchor. There is a confident balance between structure and spontaneity: broad planes of colour establish the composition, while energetic, almost impulsive marks disrupt and animate the surface. The artist’s hand is evident throughout, giving the work a raw, expressive immediacy.

The palette is warm and striking, dominated by rich vermilion reds, burnt orange, and deep maroon tones that form a saturated backdrop. Against this, the figure is rendered in creamy, off-white hues, punctuated by flashes of cobalt blue and teal. These cooler accents create visual tension and rhythm, guiding the eye across the composition and adding depth to the otherwise flattened space.

Brushwork is thick and textural, with areas of heavy impasto that catch the light and emphasise the physicality of the paint. Scraped passages and layered strokes contribute to a richly worked surface, where traces of earlier marks remain visible beneath. This layering gives the painting a sense of history and movement, as though the figure has been gradually revealed through successive gestures.

Overall, the piece is a powerful study in form, colour, and material – intimate yet bold, gestural yet composed.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame that has a gently stepped profile. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has light scuffs.

Rendered in a restrained palette of cold greys, browns, and beiges, the painting evokes the quietude of a snow-blanketed city. The brushwork is dynamic yet deliberate – broad, textured strokes create rhythmic abstractions of built forms, while impasto accents add depth and tactile intensity. The work borders on abstraction but retains enough figuration to suggest a real, lived environment – familiar yet stylised.

    Suspended Dialogues

    Sold

    SOLD

An intriguing and engaging abstract painting, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 2009 by contemporary Swedish artist Pontus Carle (b.1955).

This abstract composition unfolds as a lively visual conversation, where floating forms and intersecting marks appear suspended in a shallow, atmospheric space. Suggestive rather than literal, the painting hints at figures, tools, and architectural fragments without ever settling into a fixed narrative. Shapes drift, overlap, and counterbalance one another, creating a sense of movement and quiet tension across the surface.

Executed in a contemporary abstract style with subtle echoes of mid-century modern abstraction, the work balances spontaneity with control. Linear elements cut decisively through softer, rounded forms, while areas of transparency allow underlying layers to gently emerge. The composition feels intuitive and playful, yet carefully orchestrated.

The colour palette is restrained but expressive, anchored by soft greys and off-whites, and punctuated with confident accents of black, ochre, mustard yellow, coral, teal, and muted blue. These touches of colour animate the surface, guiding the eye rhythmically across the canvas.

Brushstrokes range from broad, gestural sweeps to delicate, calligraphic lines. Some passages are thin and translucent, revealing earlier decisions beneath, while others are more opaque and textural, lending depth and visual contrast. The result is a dynamic, layered painting that rewards close inspection and invites ongoing interpretation

This oil on canvas is is housed in a complementary slim white frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition. The work is in very good condition overall. There is a small dent located in the middle of the surface, which is subtle and does not detract from the overall visual impact.

    SOLD

A large and compelling mid century modernist abstract figurative composition in oil, painted onto board by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The scene captures three stylised figures possibly engaged in an exchange at the checkout – a familiar ritual rendered with striking simplicity and emotional weight.

The central figure, dressed in black, appears to be a shopper in mid-transaction, while the figure in pale blue behind the counter suggests a cashier. A third, more ambiguously defined figure stands nearby, perhaps another customer or a child. The figures are abstracted, skilfully reduced to essential shapes.

Thick impasto brushstrokes and rich textural layering give the work a tactile presence. The palette is earthy and architectural – orange, muted greens, brick reds, and cool greys – punctuated by flashes of white, lemon yellow, and cobalt blue, adding moments of vibrancy to the otherwise grounded tones.

The composition is rhythmic and architectural, with geometric planes converging to form an abstracted treatment of space and perspective. The flattened forms and overlapping fields of colour speak to the artist’s modernist sensibility — elevating the ordinary to the iconic.

The brushwork is gestural and textured, with generous impasto lending physical depth and spontaneity to the canvas. Strokes appear almost sculpted in places, conveying a tactile sense of the landscape’s contours.

Overall, this piece evokes a serene, timeless mood – an evocative blend of memory and place.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary light gilt frame that has a very unique light green tint. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A very engaging and beautifully presented contemporary abstract composition, painted on to canvas by British artist Frances Daws.

The Forest Bathing series captures the feeling of walking through a forest on a warm day – how the light bounces off the leaves and shadows dance on the forest floor. Luscious greens and soft yellows create a deep feeling of calm and are reminiscent of long walks and time spent sitting amongst the trees and ferns.

This small abstract painting, set within a deep white frame, presents a swirling interplay of earthy tones—olive green, beige, ochre, and hints of rusty red. The brushwork is expressive and gestural, forming a loosely circular or spiral pattern that seems to draw the viewer inward.

The layered, textured strokes give the surface a sense of depth and movement, while the overall palette evokes natural elements like moss, bark, and soil.

This piece conveys quiet energy and contemplative rhythm, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect within its modest scale.

Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition. The artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity and signature on the reverse.

Luscious greens and soft yellows create a deep feeling of calm and are reminiscent of long walks and time spent sitting amongst the trees and ferns.

This abstract painting, set within a minimalist white shadow frame, is a compact composition rich in earthy tones and gestural brushwork. Dominated by deep forest green, the canvas is energized by strokes of ochre, beige, and burnt orange, with the paint applied in sweeping, confident motions.

The brushstrokes vary in texture—some areas are smooth and blended, while others are more expressive and raw, revealing the artist’s hand.

The overall atmosphere is introspective and grounded, with a palette that evokes nature. This piece has a quietly compelling presence, inviting closer observation and personal interpretation.

A mid century modernist wrought iron sculpture mounted onto a wooden base, and dated 1980.

This very uplifting and well crafted wrought iron sculpture depicts two figures, one holding the other up. The upper figure appears to be suspended in the air from certain angles, but has one connection to the lower figure. There is playful experimentation with different shapes and forms, creating different points of interest depending on the viewing angle.

The subject of the piece is joyful, and hopeful – one figure is lifting the other presumably in celebration. It is a reminder of good times and being in high spirits.

The wooden base is monogrammed and dated.

  • Pastel Grove

    Pastel Grove

    SOLD

A soothing and pleasant mid-century abstract modernist landscape that evokes a tranquil woodland clearing bathed in the gentle glow of early morning light, executed in oil onto canvas.

Slender vertical forms suggest tree trunks rising through a softly diffused atmosphere, while a luminous central passage draws the eye inward, hinting at a path or opening beyond. The composition balances abstraction and suggestion, allowing the viewer to experience both place and feeling without strict definition.

Rendered in a delicate pastel palette of blush pinks, warm yellows, and soft sage greens, the painting captures the fleeting harmony of nature as it shifts between seasons or times of day. Subtle tonal transitions create a sense of depth and air, while muted earth tones anchor the foreground in quiet stability.

The brushwork is expressive yet restrained, with visible palette knife textures and layered impasto lending the surface a tactile richness. Paint is applied in confident sweeps and gentle scrapes, allowing underlayers to emerge and interact, enhancing the painting’s luminous, atmospheric quality. The result is a serene and contemplative modernist work: both structured and intuitive as the landscape is captured as an emotional and sensory experience rather than a literal view.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim silver frame. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Seated in Stillness

    Seated in Stillness

    Sold

    SOLD

An evocative modernist abstract painting that captures a contemplative figure rendered in bold, gestural strokes, painted in mixed media and dated 1973.

The subject is positioned frontally, seated against a patchwork of abstracted colour fields that imply an interior setting. A vivid orange dominates the figure’s body, outlined with raw yellow and offset by angular shadows in brown, crimson, and white. A striking cobalt blue cloth or object at the figure’s feet anchors the composition with a surprising burst of contrast.

Executed in a distinctly modernist style, the work fuses figurative expression with abstraction. The brushwork is confident and layered, with rough, visible strokes and a painterly energy that emphasises emotional form over anatomical precision. The background moves from a cool, washed green to blocks of saturated red and earthy brown, creating tension and spatial ambiguity.

Overall, the painting presents a powerful study in isolation, colour, and raw human presence.

This mixed media on card is presented within a white mount and a gilt frame, and is glazed (there is a layer of glass between the frame and the painting to ensure its longevity). The painting has some craquelure present, but its overall condition is stable as it is framed behind glass.
