• Harbour in Hues

    Harbour in Hues

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid-century modernist harbour scene that captures the liveliness of a bustling port through an abstracted lens, executed in oil onto board.

The composition features stylised boats with tall masts, cranes, and sails, all arranged in a rhythmic balance that evokes both movement and stillness. A triangular sail anchors the right side of the canvas, while geometric ship structures rise on the left, framed against a luminous sky.

The artist has used a modernist, semi-abstract style, reducing forms to simplified shapes and colour blocks while maintaining recognisable nautical motifs. The colour palette is fresh and expressive: soft yellows and muted greys provide a serene backdrop, while accents of bright red, orange, and yellow inject energy and contrast.

The brushstrokes are confident and varied. This interplay of texture adds depth and dynamism, suggesting reflections on water and the shifting atmosphere of a harbour at work.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wooden frame with traces of gilt and muted red accent. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.

  • Garden Gathering

    Garden Gathering

    Sold

    SOLD

A lively mid-century modernist oil painting that presents a group of figures gathered in a semi-abstract outdoor scene, by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The arrangement suggests a social gathering – figures standing and seated together, framed by architecture on one side and lush garden foliage on the other.

Executed in a modernist style, the piece blends figuration with abstraction. Strongly simplified forms and flattened planes dominate, with outlines and shadow blocks creating sculptural presence. The absence of facial detail recalls both cubist reduction and expressionist distortion, allowing colour and rhythm to take precedence over narrative realism.

The palette is bold yet harmonious, with deep navy and forest greens offset by vibrant pinks, oranges, and sky blues. Light falls diagonally across the canvas, producing rich contrasts between shadowed areas and illuminated patches. The brushstrokes are broad, gestural, and confident, with layered pigment applied in sweeping movements that build both depth and dynamism.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffing.

  • Geometric Collage in Green

    Geometric Collage in Green

    Sold

    SOLD

A very unique original artwork by British artist Dave Boyd, constructed from discarded books (repurposed cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards) mounted on a wooden panel in a solid wood float frame.

A vertical grid of nine rectangles is perfectly centred. The blocks are painted or stained in muted natural tones—sage green, forest green, golden yellow, off-white, slate blue, and pale grey-green. Each block has a slightly different surface texture, reminded us of its textile origins.

The grid is precisely placed against a horizontal division line running through the middle of the board. This intersection anchors the composition, giving it a feeling of structural harmony. There’s a sense of order meeting time-worn imperfection—a modernist grid laid over a surface that tells a more ancient, weathered story.

The artwork is presented in wood frame that suits it very well. It has been constructed with professional grade adhesive and is shipped with robust fixings, ready to hang, Both artwork and frame are in excellent condition.

Dave’s artistic practice focuses on the juxtaposition between the manmade and the natural and the human experience of geometric forms, surfaces and materials. Paintings and collages often embody a built or constructed aesthetic and are strongly influenced by architecture and the built environment, with the aim of suggesting visual encounters with structures and landscapes. • Riverbend

    Riverbend

    Sold

    SOLD

A vivid mid-century modernist abstract landscape, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition captures the dynamic energy of a frozen waterway winding through a snowy terrain beneath a dramatic sky. The artist has used broad, expressive brushstrokes and a striking palette to evoke the chill of winter and the fleeting glow of sunset.

The sky dominates the composition, rendered in bold swathes of blue and overlaid with dashes of fiery orange, crimson, and yellow, suggesting a sun just dipped below the horizon. Below, the frozen river curves with movement, painted in cool whites and icy blues, while gestural patches of green, orange, and brown represent trees and terrain along the banks. A structure and a vivid red form – perhaps a vehicle or boat – add subtle focal points within the composition.

A very unique original artwork by British artist Dave Boyd, constructed from discarded books (repurposed cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards) mounted on a wooden panel in a solid wood float frame.

At the heart of the artwork is a vertical grid of six alternating squares—three light cream/beige and three darker maroon/burgundy, forming a checkerboard column. The varying texture of these squares displays the woven materials wonderfully, contrasting with the flatness of the background.

The entire surface is a deep, muted red, subtly distressed to reveal horizontal striations and small imperfections. These faint abrasions and vertical marks break the uniformity, suggesting time, wear, and process.

  • Maternal Love

    Maternal Love

    Sold

    SOLD

An outstanding mid-century modernist abstract figurative composition, painted in oil onto board by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The composition depicts a female figure, presumably a mother, tenderly holding her child. Rendered in bold, abstracted forms, the artist has distilled the essence of human connection into simplified, interlocking shapes and planes of colour. The absence of defined facial features allows emotion to arise from posture, proportion, and palette rather than expression, giving the scene both universality and intimacy.

Executed in a modernist idiom influenced by abstraction, the work blends figurative sensitivity with geometric reduction. The artist has employed thick, confident brushstrokes and layered impasto to create texture and rhythm across the surface. Areas of colour overlap subtly, suggesting depth and volume while maintaining a flattened, almost collage-like arrangement.

A harmonious palette of teal, browns, forest green, ivory, deep burgundy, and blue anchors the composition. The dark halo of the mother’s hair contrasts with the child’s pale, luminous tones, drawing the viewer’s focus to their gentle bond. The background of layered turquoise blues adds calm and balance to the composition, enhancing its contemplative quality.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs and areas of paint loss as shown.

  • Astrid

    Astrid

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed and emotive mid-century modernist style figurative composition that presents a contemplative nude figure, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1960.

The figure, constructed through broad angular planes and softened edges, is seated in a relaxed pose, one leg bent and the torso subtly twisted – creating a gentle rhythm that guides the viewer’s gaze through the composition.

Executed in a restrained yet warm palette of ochre, sienna, and earthy umber, the body is set against a backdrop of powder blue, grey, and dusty taupe. This juxtaposition of warm and cool tones imbues the painting with both emotional tension and visual calm.

The brushwork is expressive but controlled, with textured applications of paint that oscillate between opaque coverage and dry-brush translucency, revealing the wood grain beneath. There’s a tactile quality to the strokes – layered, scraped, and directional – that accentuates the structural anatomy of the figure while maintaining abstraction.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim wood frame. The painting’s surface exhibits areas of craquelure, consistent with age. While the paint layer remains stable across most of the canvas, there is some instability noted in the central section beneath the figure’s chest. The frame is in good vintage condition.

  • Constructed Balance

    Constructed Balance

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid-century modernist abstract oil composition, painted by the established Swedish artist Bengt Delefors (1917-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, The Museum of Art in Gothenburg, Borås Art Museum, and others.

This abstract still life composition has been reduced to bold, geometric forms and overlapping planes of colour. A circular form rests against angular shapes, suggesting the presence of everyday objects reimagined through abstraction. The composition is carefully balanced, with diagonal strokes introducing movement across the canvas.

Executed in a distinctly mid-century abstract style, the work embraces simplification and geometric reduction, drawing on the principles of Cubism while leaning into a modernist emphasis on form and structure over representation.

The palette is earthy yet dynamic, dominated by deep greens, muted browns, and bold blocks of red, offset by neutral tones of beige and cream. The interplay of darker and lighter hues creates depth and tonal contrast, giving the surface both rhythm and solidity.

The brushwork is confident and expressive, with areas of thickly applied paint and visible strokes that enhance the painting’s sense of immediacy and physical presence. The layering of opaque and semi-opaque colours builds a structured, tactile surface.

This oil on board is presented in a characterful wood frame. The painting and frame is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffs.

  • Evening Harbour

    Evening Harbour

    Sold

    SOLD

A semi-abstract mid-century painting that presents a serene harbour scene with moored boats set against softly shifting reflections of water and sky, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1955.

The artist has abstracted the forms of vessels and docks into interlocking geometric planes, capturing the essence of the harbour through suggestion rather than detail.

Executed in a restrained yet harmonious palette, the work features muted ochres, warm browns, dusty blues, and gentle greens, punctuated by touches of rust-red along the hulls. The brushstrokes are broad and confident, laid down in flat, layered planes that create a rhythmic balance between solidity and fluidity. This compositional approach emphasises structure and form, while the softened edges convey an atmosphere of calm observation.

In true mid-century style, the painting has reduced naturalistic detail in favour of tonal harmonies and simplified shapes, evoking both modernist abstraction and lyrical impression.

An evocative semi-abstract mid-century modernist figurative painting executed in oil onto canvas by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The composition captures the fleeting impression of a lone passenger illuminated by an unseen light source- perhaps the outside world glimpsed through a carriage window.

The painting is semi-abstract, with blocks of textured pigment forming the suggestion of a figure framed by architectural shapes that recall the interior of a carriage.

The palette is a masterful interplay of deep browns, blackened greens, and oxblood reds, punctuated by soft corals, pale peach, and a sliver of white that slices the darkness like a beam of light. Heavy impasto brushwork adds physical depth, while the confident horizontal and vertical strokes convey the structure of motion and confinement.

There’s a poetic stillness to the work – an intimate moment caught in transit, abstracted through modernist sensibility yet rich in narrative potential.

A lively mid-century post-impressionist landscape composition, executed in oil onto board.

Small yet impactful, the painting showcases a vibrant and abstracted depiction of nature, where lush fields with rolling hills in the background have been deconstructed and simplified into blocks of contrasting shades.

Post-impressionist in nature, the artist has selected a saturated and rich palette – using colours to evoke emotion rather than merely representing the landscape. The use of expressive brushstrokes, combined with a lightly textured surface, contribute to the painting’s dynamic and emotive quality as well.

    Sold

    SOLD

A long and serene mid-century abstract landscape that captures the quiet expanse of a coastal scene, distilled into soft geometric fields of colour, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1956.

Blocks of pale blue, sandy beige, and warm cream suggest shifting sands, shallow waters, and reflected light, while two muted brown landforms anchor the horizon line. The overall composition evokes the sensation of gazing at the shoreline through a veil of haze or memory, where form dissolves into atmosphere.

The style is reductive and modernist, leaning toward abstraction while retaining the impression of sea, sky, and land. Broad, flat planes of colour are applied with gentle brushstrokes that reveal subtle texture beneath the surface, while thin, almost translucent layers give a sense of light filtering through. The palette is soothing and harmonious, dominated by sky blues and sandy neutrals with touches of earthy brown, evoking serenity and openness.

  • Quiet Pasture

    Quiet Pasture

    Sold

    SOLD

A tranquil and refined mid-century modernist abstract landscape painted in oil onto canvas.

This painting distils a pastoral scene into its most essential forms – three geometric sheep resting within an expanse of green, beneath a horizon softened by the meeting of land, sea, and sky. Two abstracted tree forms rise in the distance, their masses built from diffused tones of moss, teal, and yellow.

The artist employs a restrained and harmonious palette — muted greens merging into turquoise blues – evoking both serenity and space. Broad, matte brushstrokes and delicate transitions of tone give the surface a meditative quietness, while subtle traces of underpainting and warm orange edges reveal the artist’s hand and the passage of time.

Balancing figuration and abstraction, the work speaks to the essence of landscape – not as a literal depiction, but as an emotional and atmospheric impression of stillness, solitude, and the beauty of open space.

St Ives Head I (Very Large)

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK delivery only.

A very large and atmospheric abstract landscape painting, executed in oil onto board by contemporary British artist Ian Mood.

This abstract oil painting of St Ives Head conveys a powerful impression of the Cornish landscape through bold colour blocks and expressive brushwork. The composition is dominated by a strong horizontal division:

The lower portion features lush, vibrant greens, suggestive of the headland’s grassy terrain. These greens are layered and varied, with hints of dark shadows and occasional streaks of red and orange adding depth and movement. A sweeping form of deep black and charcoal arcs through the upper and middle sections, perhaps alluding to the rocky outcrop of St Ives Head or the moody Atlantic shadows. This shape anchors the piece and creates dramatic contrast. Surrounding these darker masses, icy blues and muted whites evoke the sky and sea, with the brushwork ranging from smooth to vigorously textured. Pops of pink and red in fine linear marks add visual interest and energetic tension across the central area.

The painting is both abstract and landscape-inspired, distilling the raw essence of the coastal headland into expressive colour fields and gestural marks. It reflects the elemental forces of land, sea, and weather typical of St Ives, rendered in a deeply personal, modernist style.

This very large oil on board is housed in a complementary light grey frame.  Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

Fields of Stillness (Set of 2)

    Sold

    SOLD

An elegant pair of mid-century landscapes that capture the quiet poetry of rural life through a minimalist modernist lens, and executed in oil onto canvas.

Both works feature sweeping compositions that draw the viewer into open countryside scenes  – one depicting a farmhouse on a distant ridge under a wide, tranquil sky, and the other showing a meandering country road curving gently toward thatched cottages.

The artist’s style is distinctly modernist, characterised by bold, simplified forms and strong, rhythmic geometry within the land contours. The palette is a refined harmony of sage greens, browns, and teal-blue skies – colours that evoke both calm and structure. Thick, expressive brushstrokes convey texture and light with confident economy, allowing the paint itself to suggest the terrain’s movement and atmosphere.

    SOLD.

A serene and expressive mid-century coastal landscape painting, executed in oil onto board.

This composition captures a sunlit shoreline, where land, sea, and sky converge in rhythmic harmony. Rolling waves meet sandy inlets and grassy banks, leading the viewer’s eye toward a distant tree-lined horizon under a softly clouded sky.

Executed in bold, confident brushstrokes, the work embraces an expressive, almost abstracted interpretation of nature. The artist has used impasto techniques with energetic brush movements that create a palpable texture across the canvas. Accents of crimson and cobalt heighten the visual tempo, offering flickers of contrast within the organic flow.

This painting is a landscape that captures the essence of a rural scene with an emphasis on earthy tones and expressive brushwork.

  • The Resting Muse

    The Resting Muse

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist figurative painting that presents a stylised nude form rendered in soft, interlocking shapes, executed onto canvas by Swedish painter Bengt Lundin (1924-2005) whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, as well as Modern Art Museum in Sweden.

The figure reclines in an abstracted interior space, her body defined by bold blocks of colour rather than distinct outlines. The composition is reduced to essential forms, yet the posture conveys a quiet sensuality and repose.

The artist has used a palette of muted browns, taupe, and creams, contrasted with deep blue and olive-green accents that evoke both depth and intimacy. The patterned background, suggestive of foliage or textile design, enhances the rhythmic harmony of the piece.

The brushstrokes are confident and broad, with areas of visible texture and raw canvas left exposed, lending an immediacy and honesty to the work. Each shape feels intentionally placed, balancing figuration and abstraction.

A celebration of form and tone, this painting captures the essence of modernist restraint – expressive, structured, and deeply human.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim wood frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Blue Horizon

    Blue Horizon

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid-century painting that presents a serene and minimalist abstraction of a coastal landscape, executed in oil onto board.

The composition is reduced to bold horizontal bands and planes of colour, evoking sea, sky, and shoreline through pure geometry.

The subject matter is suggested rather than depicted – soft gradations of blue recall the horizon line where sea meets sky, while the darker horizontal strip hints at a distant shoreline, and the pale lower section conveys the sandy openness of the beach.

The style is distinctly modernist, with a restrained geometric abstraction typical of mid-century sensibilities. The artist emphasises simplicity, balance, and a meditative stillness, favouring form and colour over literal detail.

The colours are cool and calming: pale sky blue and soft powder blue are contrasted with earthy browns, muted creams, and gentle yellows. These tones create both harmony and subtle tension across the composition.

The brushstrokes are controlled and smooth, with areas of solid flat colour applied in broad planes, giving the painting a crisp, clean quality. The artist’s hand is deliberately understated, prioritising structure and tonal contrasts over texture.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary and well made wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some very minor scuffing, commensurate with age.
