Coastal Abstraction

A striking and brilliantly executed mid-century modernist abstract composition that captures a rugged coastal landscape through a geometric interplay of angular shapes and layered textures, painted in oil onto board and dated 1959 by Swedish artist Gustaf Skoglund (1923-2003).
Rendered in an abstract, almost cubist manner, the artist has skilfully deconstructed and fragmented the natural scenery into overlapping planes of earthy browns, muted blues, and soft greys, evoking the rocky shoreline, rolling dunes, and distant waters.
The palette consists of subdued, earthy hues that imbue the work with a soothing yet nostalgic quality. The brushstrokes vary—some areas exhibit smooth, blended applications, while others feature expressive, swift horizontal strokes that emphasise the tactile nature of rock formations and land contours.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
