Weight of Yellow

A compelling mid-century abstract composition that centres around a loosely defined vessel form, its presence suggested through layered gestures rather than strict delineation, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1963.

The composition feels both grounded and fluid: anchored by a bold yellow mass in the lower centre, which evokes the solidity of a bowl or container, while surrounding shapes drift and dissolve into one another with a sense of quiet movement. Above, softened circular forms: one pale, one touched with a vivid yellow hint at light sources or distant suns, lending the work a subtle, atmospheric rhythm.

The style is distinctly painterly and intuitive, characteristic of mid-century abstraction where form emerges through process. The artist embraces a balance between control and spontaneity, allowing the composition to unfold organically across the canvas. There is a sculptural quality to the arrangement, with layered planes and overlapping gestures creating depth without relying on perspective.
