Distant Trees

A beautifully restrained mid-century abstract landscape depicting a broad, open terrain beneath an expansive pale sky, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition is reduced to a series of horizontal bands, with a small cluster of dark trees sitting quietly along the distant horizon. Their diminutive scale against the vastness of the surrounding landscape gives the painting a wonderful sense of solitude, stillness and space.

The artist takes a distinctly modernist, minimalist approach, stripping the landscape back to its essential forms. Rather than describing a particular place in detail, the scene is expressed through proportion, colour and atmosphere. The unusually high horizon and generous expanse of sky lend the work an almost meditative quality, while the isolated group of trees provides a subtle focal point and anchors the otherwise abstract composition.

The palette is wonderfully muted and sophisticated. Below, warmer passages of ochre, sandy beige, muted terracotta and earthy brown introduce a gentle warmth. The near-monochromatic trees are rendered in deep charcoal and grey, creating a striking yet understated contrast against the pale sky.

Brushwork is loose and broad, particularly across the horizontal stretches of land, where visible sweeps of paint reinforce the width and openness of the landscape. The sky is more softly worked, with subtle tonal variations and vertical traces of the brush lending depth to its seemingly simple surface. Around the distant trees, the handling becomes more concentrated and gestural, with compact strokes suggesting foliage and form without unnecessary detail.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim silver-toned frame. The painting has a tiny area of paint loss to the bottom right edge, as well as a small area of craquelure to the left-hand side. The paint is stable overall, and these minor signs of age do not detract from the painting’s overall appearance.
