    A brilliantly executed and characterful mid-century still life oil composition and dated 1965 by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.

    Cederberg is known for his exquisite still lifes of pears, which always capture the delightful quirkiness of this lovely fruit. He focuses on their forms, approaching the fruit and its surroundings with a modernist ethos.

    Working with a rich and saturated colour palette, four bright and vivid pears appear illuminated against a backdrop filled with muted pastel shades. Expressive brushstrokes have been used, creating a textual quality that further enriches the visual experience of the piece.

    Cederberg was a Swedish artist who made his debut on the art world in Helsingborg in 1922.  Later he participated in the  Skåne Art Association Exhibition in 1926 and the  Swedish Public Art Society exhibition in Stockholm in 1941. He is represented in several public collections in Sweden.

Cubist elements can be seen at play here – the artist highlights the three dimensionality of the apples through abstract qualities such as form and colour. The artist builds depth through different planes of colour, which is evident in both the apples as well as the fabric that they lay on. Broad gestural brushstrokes are evident, giving this piece its painterly quality. The palette is deep, rich and earthy.

    A very skilfully executed modernist still life composition in oil, painted onto canvas and dated 1986.

    In this picture, 3 apples sit on a saucer on a white surface, with  a glimpse of wood panelling in the background. The focus here is immediately on the lusciousness of colours of the apples. The simple background enhances the deep and almost jewel-like colours of the apples. The artist has skilfully captured the myriad of red, yellow and green tones of the apples. The slightly imperfect and misshapenness of the apples are enhanced by the seemingly spontaneous and expressive brushstrokes, which capture the character of the fruit wonderfully. The colours of the apples are echoed slightly in the reflection on the saucer they are on.

    The painting is housed in a beautiful gilt frame which suits the painting very well and enhances the colours within it. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
