  • Lyrical Abstraction

    Lyrical Abstraction

    Sold

    SOLD

A 20th century modernist abstract composition, painted in oil onto board.

This painting is reminiscent of the British Modern artist Peter Lanyon, who painted landscape both from many points of view, many visual perspectives, but also conceptually from different perspectives. Although it is unclear what this particular piece is inspired by (perhaps it not meant to be representative of anything at all!), it is clear that the artist is focused on the rhythm and meeting of forms. We see a mix of both harder and softer forms, built up in layers of colour, where lines and shapes meet and intersect on planes of colour behind it.

  • Stacked Objects on Red

    Stacked Objects on Red

    Sold

    SOLD

A captivating original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of unidentified objects including vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface with a splash of striking red. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist has used a relatively monochrome palette with pops of colour including the green and yellow circles and red backdrop, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with carved patterns. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

The artist has used a muted colour palette dominated by cool and warm earthy tones—grey, beige, brown, with touches of blue and orange-red that provide subtle contrast. The colours are layered in blocks, creating a sense of depth while maintaining the flatness of the canvas.

The brushwork is broad and visible. The edges of the shapes are soft rather than sharply defined. The composition captures the essence of the objects without focusing on intricate details, allowing the viewer to appreciate the play of shapes and colours.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner gilt window. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    SOLD

A visually striking and lively mid-century modernist style still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The painting features an array of objects including a bottle, jug, bowl, book, and cup, arranged on a table. Masterfully containing elements of abstraction and cubism, the artist has skilfully reconstructed and simplified the scene down to geometric shapes in contrasting colours to demonstrate a sense of depth to the painting.

The brushstrokes are visible and expressive, imbuing the work with energy. The colour palette is rich yet muted, dominated by cool tones like blues and greens, with warm accents in the yellows and reds. The juxtaposition of these tones brings depth and contrast to the piece.

Overall, the painting has been brilliantly executed, and the focus lies on the interplay of form and colour over realism.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with black edges. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A fantastic mid-century geometric abstract composition titled ‘The Library’, dated 1966 and painted in oil onto board.

The composition features a meticulous arrangement of rectangular shapes and lines, evoking the structured complexity of a library’s architecture.

The painting uses a palette of monochrome  tones, such as greys, whites, and browns, punctuated with vibrant pops of colour—reds, yellows, greens, and blues—that add energy to the otherwise subdued composition.

The work plays with balance and asymmetry, creating a sense of depth and spatial rhythm through its overlapping blocks and grids.

The precise lines and angles give the piece a dynamic yet controlled appearance, reminiscent of the orderly arrangement of bookshelves.

This large oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame painted black. The painting and frame have some marks and imperfections as shown in close ups.
