Using a distinctly autumnal colour palette comprising earthy brown, orange, rich red, and soft grey, the artist depicts a filled vase with a shell beside it. Behind it sit two pieces of furniture including a deep red table. All the objects sit against a softly coloured backdrop, which has been split into 3 sections. There is a palpable autumnal feel and gentleness to the picture, which has a very balanced composition.

The painting is housed in a well suited gilt frame with and inner linen lined border. The painting has some scattered craquelure, mainly to the upper left side, as shown in close ups. The frame has some minor marks but is in good condition overall.

A lively mid-century modernist style still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1953.

In the foreground, a vase of striking blue flowers commands attention. Beside the vase, a single lemon, a burst of radiant yellow, also rests on the windowsill. The backdrop presents a view of buildings and houses that have been painted in light pastel shades of blues, yellows and pinks.

The artist has skilfully simplified the composition down to blocks of geometric shapes in contrasting shades and bold outlines, maintaining the modernist focus on geometric abstraction, as well as demonstrating a sense of depth to the painting.

The brushstrokes across the canvas are expressive and lightly textured, contributing to the painting’s dynamic quality.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary cream frame. The painting is in excellent condition, and the frame has very minor scuffs, commensurate with age.

Still Life with Lute

A brilliantly executed mid-century still-life modernist composition dated 1959, painted by the listed artist Arnold Eres (1917-1986) who is represented in public collections in Sweden.

Reminiscent of the well-known post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh, this piece by Eres is also characterised by bold, symbolic colours, and dramatic, impulsive and highly expressive brushwork. In this composition we see a lute by a vase of flowers. Broad brushstrokes and thickly applied paint make up this rich and textured painting which has so much to offer viewers. A wonderful detail worth noticing is the mosaic-tiled table that the vase sits upon, which plays off the colours of the background. The artist has also played with forms and shapes, creating a distinctive rhythm within the painting, such as where the bold lines in the vase are echoed in the strings of the lute.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame with a linen border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
