An atmospheric mid-century modernist style architectural scene, executed in oil onto board and dated 1965.

The painting explores contrasts between interior and exterior spaces, as it presents abstracted architectural scene viewed from within a shadowed interior, looking outward. The dark interior is punctuated by glimpses of light-filled windows or openings, suggesting the outside world. Abstract, block-like forms in the background evoke a distant cityscape.

Reflecting a modernist aesthetic and characterised by abstraction and simplicity, the artist has skilfully deconstructed the scene into geometric shapes and planes, prioritising mood and atmosphere over realistic details.

The colour palette is restrained yet effective, with dark tones of black and deep blue contrasted by creams and whites and subtle pops of orange, creating a sense of depth and light.

The brushwork is deliberate and textured, with visible strokes that emphasise the materiality of the paint. The application is rough and expressive, suggesting immediacy and a desire to capture the essence of the scene rather than its details.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in very good vintage condition, and the gilt frame has some scuffs but this is in keeping with its vintage style.
