  • Jug & Fruit

    Sold

    SOLD.

A delightful mid century modernist still life in oil, painted onto canvas board.

This cubist inspired piece features a lively colour palette, with a range of pastel colours creating a composition that exudes playfulness. The composition is brilliantly laid out, with a range of shapes, forms, lines and patterns all interacting and conversing with each other to create this very well balanced painting. Despite the distinct and intentional move away from realism, we can still discern wonderful details like the fact that the table is wooden, and that the chair is rattan. The artist clearly has achieved a mastery with this genre.

This oil on canvas board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in  excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some very minor areas of scuffing that do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the painting.

  • Coffee Pot & Fruit

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century modernist still life in oil, painted in 1951.

This vivid and textured still life depicts a group of fruit, including a pineapple, orange and lemon, and a long white coffee pot, set on a table. Expressive and gestural brushwork in rich and saturate colours fill the canvas, creating areas of impasto (where the paint is applied very thickly) which add depth and interest to the painting. This painting would certainly add a pop of colour to space, and would be very well suited to a kitchen or dining area.

  • Red Wall

    Sold

    SOLD.

A vivid and confidently executed large mid century modernist interior scene, painted in oil onto canvas.

This quaint interior composition has an array of wonderful details and patterns – two paintings sit on a vivid red wall, and in front of that is a table covered in a red striped tablecloth, with two chairs next to it. Atop the table we see a range of objects, including a tray of jugs and a vase of flowers. Interestingly, the two chairs face the us (the viewers), creating a picture that seems to invite us in to join the jolly that is about to begin.

This expressionist and richly coloured painting is housed is in its original mid-century wide profile frame that pairs beautifully with the painting.  The artwork is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some surface marks but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness and is in keeping with its overall look and style.

  • Study of a Standing Nude

    Sold

    SOLD.

A fantastic modernist style portrait, painted in oil and dated 1964.

A nude figure is depicted standing on a muted pink platform and against a calming blue background. With her gaze slightly turned, she is back-facing the viewer and caught unaware.

The artist demonstrates a great aptitude for painting the female body, as he skillfully captures the curves and angles of the figure.

He has also used artistic techniques of shading and shadowing. These not only add the illusion of depth and three-dimensionality to the painting, but to direct our eyes as the viewer to the focal point of the work.

This oil on canvas is housed in a stunning grainy wood frame with a double silver window and an inner linen lining. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Crowd

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and confidently executed mid century semi abstract modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

In this scene we see four main figures amongst a blur of people – the artist has left out realistic details, and focused instead on colour, form and texture. Broad, gestural brushstrokes in non representational colours fill the canvas, creating this expressionist composition. There is a distinct sense of movement in the background, with the 4 figures standing out within it, almost as if it could be a recollection of a memory or dream.

The surface is heavily textured, with areas of heavy impasto where the paint has been very thickly applied.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame, with an inner linen lined border. There is some minor craquelure to the painting (as shown in close ups), due to the thickness of the paint. But the paint layer is stable overall. There is some minor scuffing to the frame. Neither of these signs of ageing detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • The Yellow Chair

    Sold

    SOLD.

A simple but very intriguing modernist composition in oil, painted into canvas and dated 1970.

This expressionist painting has transformed what would normally be a mundane object (a chair) into a very striking vision. The empty chair is given pride of place in the forefront of the composition, painted in a bright yellow colour. Set against a whitewashed wall, this contrast again emphasises the chair and its striking yellow. There is also a very interesting juxtaposition between the decorative and regal looking door or window which is adorned with flowers and gilding, next to the simple and functional rustic chair.

This playful painting is set within a simple wood frame which suits it very well. Both frame and painting are in good vintage condition.

  • A Melody

    Sold

    SOLD.

A lyrical and emotive mid 20th century still life painting, executed in oil onto canvas. The composition depicts an elegant display of a violin, a musical sheet, 2 fruits and glass objects placed atop a table.

Large broad diagonal brushstrokes fill the background and foreground of the canvas in an expressive and rhythmic manner –  almost resembling the visual melody of the violin playing, as well as the artist’s passion for music.

A muted darker pastel palette comprising shades of purple, blue and pink have been used, imbuing the work with both a soft yet dramatic feel that is aligned to its melodic qualities.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a gilt frame with an inner linen lining, that complements the work very well. The frame has slight markings and scuffs, but this is very minor.

  • Plate with Pansies

    Sold

    SOLD.

A pleasant and well-executed mid 20th century still life in oil, depicting a group of objects on a table including a glass of purple flowers, a plate, and apples.

This painting emphasises the beauty of still life, where a group of everyday objects that are normally ignored are placed centre stage, forcing us to look and notice their shape, form and colour. Here the artist has juxtaposed contrasting colours to create a sense of depth and space. The broad and expressive brushstrokes add an element of tactility to the painting as well. Overall, there is a wonderful luminous and diaphanous quality to the painting.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame with a cream coloured linen border. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Flask & Fruit

    Sold

    SOLD.

A charming mid century modernist still life in oil dated 1949, painted onto canvas which has then been laid down to backing board.

The composition depicts a vase of flowers among some fruit and another vessel. The painting features deep and vivid colour, creating a lovely moody effect. There is a timelessness to the painting, which focuses on shape, colour, line and form. The artist has intentionally made bold black outlines visible, drawing our attention the shape and form of the objects depicted, which have been set against a background that plays off the colours of the objects.

The painting is housed in a unique distressed bronze frame, with an inner linen lined window. There is some wear to the upper left corner of the painting as shown in the close up. The frame has some general signs of ageing.

  • The Farmer’s House

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid century cubist composition of an interior scene, painted in oil onto canvas in 1956.

In this painting, the artist has played with angles, shapes, patterns and colours. The space has been flattened, and perspective skewed. As a result, we have a very unique and intriguing composition before us, that allows us to look at the everyday objects within it in a very different way and notice things that would otherwise go unnoticed. This fragmented and abstracted image of an interior emphasis the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas instead of creating the illusion of depth.

The painting is housed in a wood frame that complements it well. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Blue Vase & Fruits

    Sold

    SOLD.

A soothing and elegant mid 20th century still life executed in oil, where a group of fruits including an apple, orange, 3 pears as well as a blue vase are depicted atop a green surface.

A rich and lively palette including blues and greens have been used to paint the objects, as they sit against a beautiful peach backdrop filled with multiple undertones. The artist displays his painterly skills by using different hues of each shade and blending them well together to achieve a sense of three-dimensionality for each object.

The painting has been well-executed in an expressionist manner –  with dynamic and detailed brushstrokes lending the artwork an impressive visual and vibrant appeal.

This oil on board is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in a well-suited light wood frame, and there is a very small area of surface paint loss to the the right edge of the frame, but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness and is in lined to its vintage feel.

  • Iris

    Sold

    SOLD.

An absolutely lovely mid century floral composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

There is an element of intrigue when it comes to decoding this picture. Just entering the left side of the composition is the edge of the back of an artist’s stretched canvas, with the long stem of the iris flower in the middle, and then to the right we have what looks like a wooden beam at an angle. Is the canvas leaning against the wall? And the beam perhaps the edge of a window? Or is the artist actually facing a mirror, painting the reflection of what he sees, including the back of his canvas?

The blue that the artist has used is deep and rich. It draws you in and goes perfectly with the wood and gilt frame. The artist has painted the iris flower delicately and intricately, capturing its sumptuous colours and its tall, stout stem.

The painting is housed in a very well suited dark wood frame with an inner gilt window. The painting has a very small area of paint loss to the bottom left section (as seen in close up photo). The frame has some scuffs to its lower edge. Overall the painting and frame is in good vintage condition.

  • On the Metro

    Sold

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A large and playful mid century  British modernist oil composition of several figures on the metro in Paris, painted onto artist’s board.

The colourful composition has a fun, childlike quality to it that makes it  a joy to look at. Although seemingly simple and ‘naive’ at first glace, it is in fact a very well executed painting. The composition and use of colours is perfectly balanced, and very satisfying to look at. Despite the lack of realistic details or colouring, we very quickly understand what we’re looking at. The artist has captured an everyday scene of rush hour on the Metro, but has incorporated a wonderful expressionist style to the piece.

The painting is housed in a gilt frame with an inner linen lined border. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffing to its edges.

  • Quirk

    Sold

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A quirky mid century modernist still life oil composition, painted onto board in 1964.

This still life features odd angles and skewed perspective, asking us to look and look again. The composition carries many little playful details that are fun to explore and discover. Everything about its layout is somewhat stilted and skewed, for example the table sits at an angle where technically everything should slide off it, and the table is not quite rectangular. The shadows of the objects don’t quite fit either. The floor boards that sit below the table are in a different colour at every section, representing the way the light hits the floor differently. The top edge of the window sits at an angle that is not in line with the curtain rod above. Very interestingly, out the window we see a wall that has a arched shape exit where we can see the view of the seascape beyond. There are more details to discover, but all in all this surreal still life carries so many interesting features that are a delight.

The painting is housed in a gilt frame with a winner linen lined  border.  Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • The Open Door

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and very well executed mid century modernist interior composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

Flat planes of colour in a myriad of angles create this very distinctly modernist interior. The traditional method of using perspective to create depth has been intentionally ignored, with the artist focusing instead on using complementary colours and geometric shapes to create a sense of space. The artist has very interestingly concentrated these formal qualities on the surfaces of the interior and its background, but has painted the objects portrayed within the interior in a much more detailed manner. The vase of flowers on the table with the bottles as well a the chair carry a different and more detailed style, which contrasts very well with the more angular shapes of the floor, walls and the view that continues outside.

The painting is housed in a gilt frame and with an inner linen lined border. The painting has some small areas of paint loss, as shown in close ups, but these do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. The frame has some losses to its edges, as shown.

  • Dahlias

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and very expressive mid century floral still life composition in oil, painted in 1941.

Reminiscent of still lifes by the well known painter Vincent Van Gogh, this floral oil also features similar characteristics such as the vibrant contrasts of complementary colours, and short and swift expressive brushwork. In this picture, we see a bouquet of dahlias sitting in an aquamarine vase, and behind that sits a green leaved potted plant. On the bottom right, a small bowl punctuates and balances out the composition. Studying the painting up close, we can see how the artist has used criss-cross brushwork to create depth and three dimensionality, as well as capture the effects of light. There is a wonderful sense of movement and dynamism in the picture. and it would make a striking addition to an interior space.

This large painting is housed in a robust light coloured frame that suits it very well. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has a loss to the top edge, as shown. It is otherwise in a good and stable condition.

A seemingly simple yet very striking mid century modernist still life in oil, painted onto board.

A group of unpretentious and unostentatious objects sit stoically atop a table.  The artist draws our attention to the simple, clean shapes, set against the angular lines of the placemats underneath them, as well as the restrained colour palette. The painting is housed in a green wood frame with an inner linen lined border. The colours of the frame match perfectly with the colours of the painting, further enhancing it.

  • Ladies Lunch

    Sold

    SOLD.

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A striking and brilliantly mid century cubist composition in oil, painted onto board.

This painting depicts two female figures seated at a balcony table, with a jug and two glasses in front of them. Beyond the balcony is an ocean view with the setting sun.

The artist has reduced the scene down to its formal qualities, focusing on shape, line, pattern and colour. The figures and the scene surrounding them have been painted from multiple angles under a cubist ethos, resulting in a composition that appears fragmented and abstracted. The artist has also restricted his colour palette, using a majority of vivid red, brown, white and orange in different tones. Notwithstanding the fragmentation and palette, the painting is wonderfully balanced and sings with harmony.

This piece would make a very striking addition to any interior and would be a real statement piece.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some damage to the inner section of its lower right corner, as shown in the close up photos.

  • Siesta

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore..

A wonderfully simple yet very effective composition, executed in oil in 1947. The artist has painted a scene of a figure lying in bed, but has paired it down to large swathes of colour and broad brushstrokes. For example, the artist has painted the figure’s head with three simple strokes in non-realistic colours. Leaving out any realistic detail, the artist uses contrasting colour very effectively, even allowing parts of the canvas to show through. The combination of minimal use of paint and effective technical skill allows us to really take in and enjoy all the discernible details while having a timelessness that enables this picture to suit many interior settings.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
