  • Rising Harlequin

    Sold

    SOLD

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A small but powerful abstract composition by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted in oil onto linen panel. Signed, titled and dated on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

  • Seated

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and characterful modernist figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1958.

The painting features an elongated figure seated on an orange and cream platform, set against a contrasting purple-grey backdrop. Containing elements of abstraction, the painting captures the essence of the human form through expressive brushstrokes, rich muted colours, and a reduction of realistic details.

The figure, has been rendered in creamy tones with expressive hints of muted blue, purple, and pink, and its elongated and seated form suggests a contemplative state. Through skilfully layering of colours, the artist has exposed the underlying grey that delicately traces the silhouette of the figure, enhancing its presence and providing a subtle sense of structure amidst the abstract composition.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary purple frame that pairs wonderfully with the painting. There is a very small area of craquelure to the figure, as shown in close up photos, but this is commensurate with age and does not detract from its overall attractiveness. The painting is otherwise in excellent vintage condition.

  • Soul

    Sold

    SOLD.

An absolutely brilliant mid century nude study, painted in oil and dated 1944.

In this composition a female figure sits on an intricate fabric, her gaze turned away from us. The minimalist palette of her body sits in contrast to the richly coloured fabric below her, creating a wonderful juxtaposition. The artist’s brushstrokes are long and expressive, giving this piece its painterly feel.

The painting is housed in a really lovely deep profile frame which suits it wonderfully. The painting has some light age marks and the frame has some scuffing, but neither of these detract from the attractiveness of the piece.

  • Three Graces

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid century original coloured lithograph by the Italian artist Marino Marini, titled ‘Le Sacre du Printemps’, printed by the well known French printers studio Mourlot in Paris in 1973.

‘Le Sacre du Printemps’ (The Rite of Spring) is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was the source of inspiration for this artwork by Marini.

One of Italy’s most celebrated sculptors of the 20th century, Marino Marini primarily produced figurative bronze sculptures, though his practice also included paintings, drawings and etchings. Marini drew on the tradition of Etruscan and northern European sculpture, reinterpreting classical themes such as the female nude, the portrait bust, and the equestrian figure, which he combined with aspects of modernism—in particular exaggerated and elongated forms. Towards the end of his career Marini’s sometimes-monumental sculptures became increasingly abstracted. On trips to Paris and New York, he associated with Giorgio de ChiricoJean ArpMax Beckmann, and Alexander Calder, among other major modernist artists.

This coloured lithograph is housed in a simple gilt frame that suits it perfectly. The print is framed behind glass. Both print and frame are in good vintage condition.
