  • Grace

    Sold

    SOLD.

An intriguing and very confidently executed large oil on canvas, painted in 1987 by female Swedish artist Marianne Kanter, who monogram can be seen in the top left corner.

On first glance the painting seems almost voyeuristic – we see the backs of two men staring at the undressed female figure. As we take the time to study the painting, in particular the female figure, we begin to notice her expression – she stares directly at us with an enigmatic gaze, completely aware of her position in the room and the attention she holds, both from us as well as the male figures we see. Her confidence is unmissable. Notably, the painting is by a female artist (Marianne Kanter). Could it be that this painting was a comment on the ‘male gaze’, a term coined a few years before in the 70s? We might never know the answer for sure, but it certainly makes the painting a beguiling and intriguing one.

This large oil on canvas is presented in a very complementary slim frame that suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Green Contours

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and richly textured modernist landscape oil composition, signed by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

Containing elements of abstraction, the artist has skilfully captured the essence of rolling hills and a dense forest, simplifying and reducing the scene down to planes of limited contrasting colours, and using bold black outlines and green to define the contours of the natural elements.

The artist has deliberately used a restrained palette that allows for a harmonious and balanced color scheme, with cream hues with subtle yellow undertones evoking a sense of warmth and serenity, while the use of rich forest green signifies lushness and vibrancy of the landscape.

The masterful use of the impasto technique creates texture and depth to the painting – with thick, textured brushstrokes giving the artwork a tactile quality, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the scene.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim cream frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

The painting presents a Spanish landscape with houses surrounded by lush greenery in the middle ground of the painting, and some houses situated on a terrain hilly landscape in the background. Executed in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has reconstructed this tranquil scene down to blocks of contrasting light and earthy shades of green, blue, brown, and white.

The artist displays a mastery in the medium of thinned oil, using gentle and light brushstrokes that create an almost translucent and diaphanous effect that resembles the nature of watercolour.
