A really striking abstract modernist composition in oil, painted in 1995.
The artist has used broad, expressive and gestural brushwork to depict this composition, using a colour palette that captures the very essence of the cold icy landscape of winter. There is a palpable sense of movement and rhythm within the work – we can imagine the artist’s hand working back and forth, creating a myriad of marks and strokes on the paper. The colours used are also fascinating to explore – as we look closely at the work, a multitude of colours that appear through the layers of paint begin to show themselves.
This oil is protected behind glass and as such, getting close up photos of the textures and depth proved tricky. The painting has wonderful areas of impasto (where the paint is applied so thickly that it stands proud from the surface), and a whole range of textural details.

This large and very textured painting depicts a view of the church of Saint-Rigomer et Sainte-Tenestine in Vaulhallen, France. Fine and angular outlines contrast brilliantly against areas of broad, expressive brushwork. To add to this, the artist has added an aggregate to some areas creating textured areas of impasto. The large size and intense detailing creates a myriad of aspects for the view to explore and enjoy. The artist has very skilfully managed to capture the ‘patina’ of the old structure, as well as the almost ‘golden’ light that is cast on the monument, using a restricted colour palette with highlights to create a sense of space, depth, and light.

The painting has a beautifully gentle feel to it – the artist has used mostly soft colours in a pastel palette, with the exception of darker colours for the wood structures within the scene. The artist has successfully conveyed the softness of fresh snow that has covered the landscape. The cityscape of Stockholm under a pastel sky lines the back of the composition, while in the foreground we see a boat docked on the river Söderström. In the foreground, the artist has used richer, darker colours contrasted with the white snow to give our eyes a focus, and then lightening as we move further back into the composition. The movement of the brushwork is also interesting to notice, with areas of more distinct horizontal and vertical strokes contrasting against other areas with shorter, swifter strokes.

There is a striking contrast between the top half and the bottom half of the composition, which makes this painting very interesting to admire. To the top half of the composition we have much shorter, softer brushwork, which give us a sense of the light movement and airiness of the sky. Punctuating the composition just off centre, is a standing tree, giving our eyes a point of rest, before we work our way downwards to the bottom of the composition. To the lower half, we see the use of much stronger, bolder colours as well as thicker and more textured paint application. Rather than painting the field realistically, the artist has reduced the details down to abstracted forms – planes and brushstrokes of earthy colours that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, successfully giving this painting its sense of space and depth.
