  • Boats on the Shore

    Boats on the Shore

    Sold

    SOLD

A rich and bold mid century modernist composition, painted in oil on board and dated 1952.

This painting depicts two stylised boats resting on a sandy shore, viewed from a slightly elevated angle. The hulls of the boats are painted in shades of green with dark horizontal bands, giving them a sculptural, almost abstract quality. They are surrounded by rounded, rock-like shapes in warm earth tones—rust, ochre, brown, and deep red—suggesting pebbles or boulders on a beach.

The background is composed of geometric patches of colour: the sandy shore in pale yellow, a soft blue-grey sky, and darker land masses or shadows in the distance. The boats’ exaggerated shapes and placement suggest a symbolic or decorative interpretation, rather than strict realism.

The painting carries a calm, grounded energy, blending modernist abstraction with the nostalgic imagery of coastal life. It emphasizes shape and colour harmony over fine detail, creating a dreamlike and contemplative atmosphere. The work feels both playful and meditative, inviting the viewer to interpret the scene in multiple ways.

This oil on board is housed in a very well made and complementary frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There is some scuffing to the edges of the frame, but it is in good condition overall.

  • Low Horizon

    Low Horizon

    Sold

    SOLD

A mid century modernist landscape composition in oil, painted onto board and dated 1958.

This painting is a minimalist landscape, capturing a solitary figure walking down a wide, pale path—possibly a country road—toward a low horizon.

The solitary figure, painted in dark tones, is central and walking away from the viewer, creating a sense of distance, journey, or introspection. The path is a broad, almost white expanse that dominates the foreground and narrows toward the horizon, drawing the eye into the depth of the scene. On either side of the path, blocks of green fields and light brown earth subtly divide the composition. The horizon line is low, with a few small, dark farm buildings or trees silhouetted against a pale blue-grey sky.

The style is impressionistic and minimalist, with loose, broad brushstrokes and a limited colour palette. The use of soft blending and lack of sharp detail gives the painting an atmospheric, serene mood. The ambiguity of the figure’s form adds to the emotional and poetic quality of the scene.

This is a quiet, evocative painting that suggests solitude, rural simplicity, and the passage of time. The lone figure on a vast path invites viewers to ponder themes of journey, memory, or homecoming, all conveyed through understated yet emotive brushwork.

This oil on board is housed in a very well suited distressed gilt frame, with a linen inner border. enhancing its classic and contemplative feel. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There are some paint losses to the frame as shown in the photos.

  • Cubist Study

    Cubist Study

    Sold

    SOLD

A large, striking and brilliantly executed mid-century cubist figurative oil portrait, painted by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

The painting depicts a simplified human figure dressed in an orange attire, in a seated position with her hands clasped in front.

Drawing inspiration from elements of cubism and geometric abstraction, the artist has masterfully flattened and fragmented the composition down to distinct geometric planes and angular shapes that interact with one another. Each respective shape seems to occupy its own distinct space, yet together they form a cohesive and harmonious whole.

The colour palette is consists of bold orange and a mix of muted shades including light terracotta, beige, and grey-blue, with occasional accents of black and cream. The blocks of colour are cleanly defined, yet they transition fluidly into one another, avoiding harsh contrasts. The contrasting darker and lighter tones highlights the three-dimensional qualities of the figure and surrounding, whilst simultaneously emphasising the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas.

The brushstrokes are smooth with subtle textural variations. Each stroke is deliberate and calculated, reinforcing the angular, segmented forms of the composition.

Short, expressive brushstrokes add energy to the scene, emphasising the artist’s hand in creating the work.

Overall, the painting has a wonderful balance between form and colour, simplicity and expression. And the composition invites viewers to appreciate the beauty of everyday objects.

This oil on board is housed in a well-suited wood frame with multiple profiles. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 67.5 x 77.5 cm (including frame)

  • The Blue Vest

    The Blue Vest

    Sold

    SOLD

An excellently executed modernist oil on canvas, painted by Bo Hultén (b.1945), whose works have been presented in the Modern Museum of Art, and the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm. His work is also presented at the Gripsholm Gallery in Stockholm and the Municipal Museum in Malmö

This painting by Bo Hultén is a relatively early work. His style is reminiscent of the modernist tradition in which figures are deconstructed into basic shapes and surfaces. The geometric structure has parallels to Cubism and Post-Cubism, in which volumes and perspectives dissolve into flat fields of colour. The face is anonymous and unspecified, which enhances the abstract expression and directs the viewer’s focus to the shapes of the body and the colour composition.

The blue garment in the centre acts as a central colour point, while the dark and light contrasts create a balanced composition. The orange element in the lower left corner breaks off and adds dynamism to the painting. The background is minimalist and neutral, which makes the figure appear more clearly.

Hultén’s work can be placed within Scandinavian modernism, where an austere but poetic simplicity often occurs. His way of simplifying human figures into almost iconic forms is reminiscent of artists such as Fernand Léger or Swedish modernists such as Olle Bærtling (although Bærtling was more pronounced abstract).

The painting is presented in a wood frame which suits it perfectly. There are some marks and general age wear to painting, but it is in good condition overall. The frame has some scuffs, but is also in good condition.

    Size: 64.5 x 54 cm (including frame)

    Pair of Abstract Figures

    Sold

    SOLD

A set of mini mid-century abstract figurative paintings that exude a subtle yet captivating presence, painted in oil onto canvas and sold as a pair.

The artworks feature semi-abstract figures rendered in soft, muted tones. The compositions are characterised by minimalistic and expressive forms, highlighting the human figure through simplified shapes and subtle contouring.

The left painting presents a solitary figure standing against a light, neutral background, with muted pinks and grey tones. The right painting features a seated figure set against a darker, contrasting background, with similar hues and strokes of yellow complemented by deeper shades of black and blue. The figures, though abstracted, convey a sense of poised tranquillity.

The artist’s brushstrokes are loose and textured, creating a raw, organic quality that enhances the sense of movement and form. The layered application of paint, particularly in the figures, lends depth and a sense of abstraction, while the bold, yet soft, contours define the shapes without overwhelming the composition.

These oil on canvases are each housed in complementary wood frames. Both paintings and frames are in excellent vintage condition.

Size of each painting: 26 x 21.5 cm (including frame)

  • The Bouquet

    The Bouquet

    Sold

    SOLD

A very unique and vivid mid century semi abstract oil composition, painted on board and dated 1964 on the reverse.

In this composition  we see a vase of flowers which have been painted in a semi-abstract modernist style. The artist has intentionally chosen now to focus on the realistic forms of the florals, and has instead drawn attention to the shapes, colours and lines of the bouquet. Its formal elements are echoed in the background which appears to be the framework of a window, creating a really fun and striking picture. The bright colours contrast against the bold, black outlines and the starkly white vase.

This brilliantly executed oil on board is housed in a wide profile wood frame with decorative carvings. The painting is in good vintage condition, and the frame has some minor scuffing as shown.

    Size: 51.5 x 68 cm (including frame)

    Abstract Horizon

    Sold

    SOLD

A mid-century modernist abstract landscape painting that captures a rugged, windswept terrain through expressive and gestural brushwork, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition evokes an expansive natural scene, possibly an autumnal field or rocky desert, with layered horizontal bands of colour suggesting depth and movement. The artist has used bold black forms scattered across the canvas, which could represent geological formations, shadows, or abstracted land contours.

Rendered in a striking palette of earthy ochres, deep rusts, and burnt yellows, the warm hues contrast dramatically against the bolder black strokes. The upper section features a pale beige sky, creating a sense of atmospheric openness that enhances the composition’s spatial depth.

The painting is executed with raw, gestural brushstrokes and areas of impasto, adding an energetic and dynamic quality.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary white painted wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffing.
