  • Lyrical Abstraction

    Lyrical Abstraction

    Sold

    SOLD

A 20th century modernist abstract composition, painted in oil onto board.

This painting is reminiscent of the British Modern artist Peter Lanyon, who painted landscape both from many points of view, many visual perspectives, but also conceptually from different perspectives. Although it is unclear what this particular piece is inspired by (perhaps it not meant to be representative of anything at all!), it is clear that the artist is focused on the rhythm and meeting of forms. We see a mix of both harder and softer forms, built up in layers of colour, where lines and shapes meet and intersect on planes of colour behind it.

This oil on board is presented in  a wide walnut veneered frame that suits it well. Both the painting and frame are in good vintage condition, with some very minor wear to the frame  commensurate with age.

  • Stacked Objects on Red

    Stacked Objects on Red

    Sold

    SOLD

A captivating original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar HÃ¥llander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of unidentified objects including vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface with a splash of striking red. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist has used a relatively monochrome palette with pops of colour including the green and yellow circles and red backdrop, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

The houses, with simplified forms, merge with the sky at dawn and rugged terrain, evoking a sense of rural quiet.

The expressive brushwork suggests a textured, almost impressionistic approach, with soft, blended tones of olive, brown, and muted greens in the landscape, a pale blue sea, and a greyish sky overhead. The trees are loosely painted with dark greens and browns, adding to the moody ambiance.

This oil on canvas housed in its original mid century frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffs and paint losses, but this is quite in keeping with its vintage style.

    Size: 39 x 88.5 cm (including frame)

  • Two Oranges

    Two Oranges

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist still life in oil, painted onto canvas.

Deep, earthy colours make up this subdued palette, which is composed of a trio of bottles and 2 oranges atop a table. There is a distinct focus on form and line, where the artist has played with the shape of the objects and their shadows against geometrical planes. Areas of impasto are visible, where the paint has been painted thickly and we can see the directional strokes of the artist’s brush, creating a painterly effect. The texture of the painted surface also adds the three dimensionality of the painting, as well as highlights the effect of light on the painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen border. There is a small area of paint loss at the lower right corner of the painting (as shown) but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

    Size: 80 x 60 cm (including frame)

  • Autumnal Forest

    Autumnal Forest

    Sold

    SOLD

A rich and striking mid-century semi-abstract landscape composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The painting presents a vibrant forest scene. Executed in a semi-abstract manner, all realistic details have been omitted and the composition has been reduced to vertical strokes that suggest slender tree trunks, as well as blocks of colour swathes that resemble leaves and the earthy ground.

The artist has selected an earthy autumnal palette featuring rich shades of browns and reds, with flashes of green and blue, imbuing the painting with a sense of warmth. The brushstrokes are dynamic and painterly, creating an expressive and lively depiction of a forest.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary deep profile gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has light scuffs.

    Size: 58 x 74 cm (including frame)

  • Fruits & Pitchers

    Fruits & Pitchers

    Sold

    SOLD

A lively and brilliantly executed mid-century modernist style still life composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1953.

The scene features an assortment of objects including two pitchers, a plate of fruit, a bottle of wine, and some flowers, and a partial view of a chair in the background.

Drawing on a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has masterfully reduced this scene down to blocks of contrasting colours, and explores the use of colour and brushstrokes to create a sense of depth as well as highlight the three-dimensional qualities of the objects.

Short and expressive brushstroke have been used, and the artist has thoughtfully selected a bold colour palette including rich green, orange and yellow tones, imbuing the work with an energising and uplifting feel.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary mint green wood frame.  The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has a small kink but this appears to be part of the quirkiness of the wood rather than a condition issue.

    Size: 81 x 53 cm (including frame)
