  • Boat in Port

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very well executed mid century semi abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

Here we see a boat docked in front of a building, but the artist has chosen to focus on formal qualities such as form, shape, line and colour. Working under a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has very cleverly reduced the scene down to flat planes of colour, creating a cubist, geometric effect in the composition, bringing our attention to the fact that this is indeed a painting on a surface, shaped by the artist’s own view and perception, as opposed to a realistic depiction of a boat by a shed. Yet details like the stillness of the water, the reflection of the boat, and the structures involved are still so masterfully captured.

This oil painting is housed in a very well suited gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

Using a beautiful and restrained muted colour palette, the painting exudes calm,  and the strong play of light and dark shades as gives the illusion of depth.

  • Essence Landscape, Bird, Fish

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but powerful abstract composition by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted with oil stick and graphite onto linen panel. Signed, titled and dated on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

Lloyd Durling is a British artist working in London. His practice is painting-based and he has exhibited widely throughout Europe, U.S.A and Asia. In 2017 he was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Works are held in both public and private collections worldwide.

This painting is housed in a complementary silver frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition, and there is some damage to the lower right corner of the frame. The backing board that the painting is on is slightly uneven.

  • Lake in Light

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very quaint and atmospheric lakeside composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1939 on the reverse.

Broad, textural brushstrokes fill the canvas in an array of pastel colours, wonderfully capturing the effect of the sunlight on the lake landscape. A red and orange lake house punctuates the centre of the composition, its reflection cast on the still waters below. The house sits amidst a backdrop of mountains which have been painted in blues and purples. There is a beautiful harmony and cohesiveness in the palette of this composition, with several colours repeating in various areas of the canvas.

This oil on canvas is housed a lovely nude painted distressed frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. There appears to be an area of restoration to the sky area of the painting but this is only evident on the reverse – this restoration is not visible on the front. The frame has areas of loss, mostly to the top corner of the frame, as shown in photos, but this is in keeping with the overall vintage charm of the piece.

  • Ponder

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and emotive mid century portrait, executed in oil onto board.

The painting presents an interior setting, where a young female figure is sitting on a chair with her hands clasped together in front of her. Although the artist has intentionally chosen not to paint her facial details, there is sense of calm, and stillness. She sits quietly, comfortably, with a quality of timelessness.

The palette is soft and tender, perfectly suited to the mood of the sitter and the scene.  We know not who the figure is, but there is a palpable sense of familiarity. The painting emits a warm glow, with its shades of mellow yellow, green and orange capturing the mood and homeliness of the setting.

This painting is housed in a deep-profiled wood frame with visible grain. There are paint losses to the inner border of the frame as shown, but it matches the general look of the painting and frame. The artist has painted onto board, whose surface appears to have a sheet of very thin paper laid to it. There is very slight lift to the bottom left corner by the signature, but the paint layer is very stable overall.

  • Portrait of a Man

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist figure study in oil, painted on to canvas laid to board, and dated 1956.

Painted in a post impressionist manner, the artist has incorporated a highly personal use of colour and brushwork, directly expressing and capturing an emotional response. The male figure looks down, and not directly at us – the artist has captured him in a moment of thought and reflection. Using a minimal  yet very earthy palette of blues, browns and blacks, the artist has also chosen to focus on the angles of his hairline, facial features, coat and collar. The artist has also captured the way the light hits the figure brilliantly, creating this very well executed composition and showing off the artist’s mastery with his medium.

This oil painting is housed in a slim frame that complements the painting well. There is some wear to the edges of the painting, and to the frame which has some small losses as shown, but this is all in keeping with the overall style. Overall the painting and frame are both in good vintage condition.

  • The Painter’s Studio

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist interior scene, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1958.

While working under a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has also incorporated a playful element to the work, creating a visual puzzle for the viewer.  Intricate lines, forms, shapes and colour draw our eyes inwards encouraging us to look around this studio and build an awareness of its space and depth. There is a sense of familiarity and informality within the studio that the artist has masterfully conveyed.

The use of the Droste effect, where the artist has created a painting within a painting, creates a riddle for our eyes, beckoning us to figure out where the painting on the easel within the composition ends, and where the studio begins.  There is also the incorporation of light and shadow, but the artist has used non realistic colours to communicate this, and  has used flat planes of contrasting colours and angles to capture the light coming in through the windows of the studio.

This very large painting depicts three figures strolling on a pathway through a lush forest. In the background of the painting, we can discern a row of houses and 3 tall chimneys.

Containing elements of fauvism and expressionism, this striking painting emphasises rich colourism and decorative pattern. The artist has enhanced the colours of the natural world by using an array of vivid and saturated colours of red, blue and green. Distinct energetic and intuitive brushstrokes also fill the canvas, adding a nice light texture and imbuing the work with a sense of dynamism.

This large oil on canvas is housed in a very decorative gilt frame. The frame has some scuffing, but the appearance is still very attractive. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.
