Resting Boats

A brilliantly executed modernist style harbour scene with several sailboats moored at the dock, executed in oil onto board and dated 1930.
The composition is divided into three main areas: the sandy foreground, the deep blue water, and the distant hills under a muted sky. The boats have been simplified into geometric shapes, emphasising form over intricate detail.
The artist has used a restrained but evocative colour palette dominated by earthy browns, deep blues, and cool greys, creating a sense of harmony and balance.
The brushstrokes are bold and expressive, with visible texture adding depth and movement to the scene. The linear rigging of the boats provides a striking contrast to the more fluid rendering of the water and sky, reinforcing the structured yet dynamic nature of the composition.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen border. There are scattered surface marks and small losses to the paint surface. The frame has paint losses to its edges and corners.
Size: 49 x 57cm (including frame)
