Perhaps this painting alludes to the well known phrase ‘burning the midnight oil’, where someone has spent a long time studying and practicing their music. The well burnt candle seems to suggest this – that work has been done through the night.

The artwork has been painted in an expressionist manner in a rich and vivid palette, with gestural and textured brushwork is visible. Areas of impasto can be seen, where the paint has been applied thickly, giving this painting its textured surface.

A very well executed semi-abstract mid century modernist oil composition, painted onto canvas.

In this composition we see myriad of shapes and forms that come together seamlessly like a puzzle. What appears to be a scene of fishermen has been distributed across the canvas in a fragmented and abstracted way. There are figurative elements that we are able to identify, including two human figures as well as fish and water. But the artist has chosen to combine these elements in a cubist like manner, reducing everything to geometric outlines and shapes in different colours. The artist shows different viewpoints simultaneously, emphasising the flatness of the canvas, instead of creating the illusion of depth.

The colour palette is deep and rich, but is largely minimal, concentrating mainly on subdued tones of blue, grey, brown and green, with subtle hints of yellow and pink. The brushstrokes are visible, creating texture within the piece.
