A subdued and tranquil mid-century modernist style coastal scene composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1956.

The painting presents a quiet dockside setting, where boats rest along the shoreline against a group of angular architectural forms.

The artist has used a restrained colour palette dominated by darker earthy tones – deep browns, blacks, and greys, contrasted with soft beige, off-white, and muted blue-green hues. The darker shades contribute to the subdued atmosphere of the scene.

The brushwork is expressive yet controlled, with a mix of broad, flat areas of colour and more gestural, textured strokes.

Overall, there is an emphasis on form and structure, with a simplified, almost abstracted representation of the elements, characteristic of mid-century modernist aesthetics.

This oil on canvas is housed in a very well-suited  wood frame with a silver tint. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
