A group of unidentified objects including vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface with a splash of striking red. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist style still life composition, painted in oil onto board by prominent Swedish painter Gerhard Nordström (1925 -2019), who’s artworks have been represented at the Gothenburg Art Museum, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Kalmar Art Museum, and the Malmö Art Museum.

The painting features a table setting populated with a variety of objects. Dominating the arrangement are a brown pitcher, a pedestal bowl filled with oranges, and a large orange resting on a cloth. A red box sits beside the orange, and other smaller objects are scattered across the surface.

The colour palette is rich and harmonious, with earthy hues and deep, muted tones that create a balanced contrast. The artist employs expressive brushstrokes that lend a rhythmic flow to the composition.

The painting celebrates the simplicity and beauty found in still life, and the artist’s confident use of colour and brushstroke elevates the painting beyond its mere representation.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary silver painted wood frame with an inner white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffing.
