A very engaging nautical whale scene, painted in a naïve style in oil onto canvas, by British artist Matt Rix.
This painting features a stylised sperm whale in a whimsical, folk art style. Painted in a flat, matte black, the whale has a massive rectangular head and a curled, expressive tail. The whale’s mouth is open, revealing a row of sharp, exaggerated triangular red teeth, adding a touch of humour. It has a prominent white eye that gives it a quirky, alert expression.
Near the top of the painting, a small grey submarine floats on the ocean surface. It has a simple form with yellow-lit portholes, a periscope, and a rotating propeller indicated by motion lines. The inclusion of the submarine adds a playful narrative element, possibly hinting at a humorous or surreal underwater encounter.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
