Sidewalk Gathering

A wonderfully textured mid-century modernist style figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1959.
The painting depicts three women standing together in conversation at a sidewalk, dressed in cloaks and long skirts, each holding objects like baskets or vases. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a manner that draws the viewer’s eye through each figure sequentially.
Modernist in its ethos, the forms are simplified, and there is a focus on shapes and texture rather than intricate details. This allows the viewer to appreciate the overall composition and mood.
The painting exhibits a heavy impasto technique, with thick, textured brushstrokes that create a tactile quality on the canvas. The earthy tones and muted colour palette adds an introspective mood to the piece.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffs and marks.
Size: 64 x 80.5 cm (including frame)
