A very engaging animal composition, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This painting features a grey ram standing on a green, rolling landscape beneath a soft, cloudy sky. The ram is painted in a light grey tone with a rounded, bulky wool coat, giving it a soft, puffy appearance. A curved cream-coloured horn spirals from the side of its head, clearly identifying it as a ram.

The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the ram standing in profile facing right. The lines are clean and shapes are simplified. The brushwork is smooth, with subtle shading on the ram’s wool to add dimension without overcomplicating the form.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
