    Black & White House

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed and richly textured modernist oil composition, painted by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

Containing elements of abstraction, we can discern a house setting that has been simplified and reduced to blocks of contrasting colours and outlines that help define the contours of the surrounding environment and objects.

The artist has deliberately used a restrained palette that allows for a harmonious and balanced color scheme – with predominantly black and white hues with subtle hints of purple undertones in certain areas.

The masterful use of the impasto technique adds depth and dimension to the painting as well as a textile quality. Each textured and powerful stroke is imbued with a palpable sense of movement and emotion, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the scene.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim black painted wood frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    SOLD

A striking mid-century modernist abstract landscape painting, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition presents a stylised interpretation of nature through bold form and gestural brushwork. Two dark, vertical trees anchor the composition, their forms fragmented into thick, angular blocks of olive green, mustard yellow and inky black. The landscape is rendered as interlocking planes of colour – deep green hills, brown patches of earth, and a slate-toned pathway – leading the eye toward a serene body of pale blue water, all beneath a moody, indigo sky.

Executed in a distinctly modernist style, the work distills the natural environment into geometric abstraction. The brushstrokes are broad and intentional, layered with visible texture that suggests movement and depth. The palette is earthy and subdued, yet infused with a quiet vibrancy, reflecting the artist’s affinity for structure and form over literal representation.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame. There are some minor marks at the top central top of painting, but it is otherwise in very good vintage condition.

  • Shadowed Huts

    Shadowed Huts

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed and richly textured modernist oil composition that distills an architectural scene into a series of angular forms and geometric planes, painted by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

The composition appears to depict clustered huts rendered in an abstracted, cubist manner – each structure fragmented into simplified blocks of light and dark. The overlapping rooftops and stark verticals guide the eye across a village that feels both familiar and surreal.

The palette is moody and minimal, dominated by deep charcoal, blue, and cream tones with hints of peach. These shades add an atmospheric quietude to the scene, suggesting dusk.

Thick, directional brushstrokes carved into impasto layers give the painting a tactile depth. The artist’s hand is evident in the textured surface, with strokes laid down in rhythmic, almost architectural patterns. The style draws on both Cubist abstraction and the expressive materiality of mid-century modernism, offering a bold yet contemplative visual experience.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary black frame. The painting has some craquelure present, and the frame has some scuffs.

  • Dual Horizons (Set of 2)

    Dual Horizons (Set of 2)

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking mid-century pair that captures a bold interplay of form and colour across two abstract compositions, painted in oil by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

One panel features a cool-toned palette of slate grey, deep navy, teal, and pale blue, punctuated by a vertical yellow accent and small geometric whites and blacks. A strong horizontal composition grounds the piece, evoking a minimalist seascape or terrain without literal reference. The brushwork is confident yet restrained, layering flat blocks of colour with subtle texture.

In contrast, the other panel warms the viewer with earthy browns, burnt orange, ochre, charcoal, and a flash of cobalt blue. Its broader, blockier forms appear as abstracted architecture or landscape, with rugged edges and expressive brushstrokes suggesting motion and depth. The juxtaposition of these two works reveals Oswald’s mastery in balancing contrast – between cool and warm, geometry and gesture, stillness and energy.

Each oil on board is housed in a very well suited frame with an inner linen lining and a gilt border. Both paintings are in excellent vintage condition, and the frames have very minor scuffs.

  • Nature’s Abstraction

    Nature’s Abstraction

    Sold

    SOLD

A wonderfully executed minimalist abstract landscape composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 2012.

Although abstract in nature, the painting appears to depict a loosely defined nature setting, with elements suggesting trees, foliage, and perhaps a pathway.

All realistic details have been omitted, and the artist prioritises mood and atmosphere and she presents an abstract interpretation of nature.

The palette consists of soft, muted tones, including whites, pale pinks, creams, and yellows, contrasted by darker blacks and greens. These colours suggest tranquility and balance, reinforcing the serene mood of the painting.

The brushwork is loose and varied, with areas of thicker application and visible texture contrasting with smoother, more blended sections. The expressive, gestural strokes create movement and depth, while the layering of paint adds a tactile quality.

  • Verdant Echoes

    Verdant Echoes

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking and emotive mid-century abstract composition painted in oil onto canvas, by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting invites the viewer into a dynamic interplay of layered greens, icy blues, and deep emerald hues. Sweeping diagonals and overlapping forms create a sense of movement and quiet tension, evoking natural forms without direct representation. At its core, the painting pulses with organic vitality – its soft jade and moss tones offset by the smoky depth of midnight green and slate.

The brushstrokes vary in texture and direction, with areas of thick impasto contrasting with smoother, almost scraped-back planes. Textural accents and faint gestural arcs emerge through the surface, suggesting a hidden geometry or memory. With a palette both cool and contemplative, Verdant Echoes reflects the era’s fascination with abstraction as emotional landscape.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame. The painting has some areas of craquelure due to the thickness of paint but the paint layer is very stable overall.

    Sold

    SOLD

An expressive and dynamic mid-century modernist abstract composition of nature that distills a vast landscape into bold planes of colour and a textured palette, painted in oil onto canvas.

The painting is structured around angular swathes of earth-toned fields – deep green, blues, whites and rust – intersected by a meandering dark line that evokes a path or stream. A central ridge of forested trees anchors the horizon, silhouetted against a brooding sky rendered in diagonal strokes of lavender, mauve, and blue.

Painted with vigorous, impasto brushwork, the surface is alive with energy. SOLD

    Free shipping UK delivery only.

A fun and playful large 20th century cubist composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1975 by Belgian artist Pierre Goossens.

This painting is a vibrant and structured cubist-style still life, featuring a table densely packed with musical instruments and domestic objects, rendered in flattened geometric forms and bold, contrasting colours.

At the centre is a large guitar, overlapping with a mandolin or lute, both abstracted into simplified, stylized shapes. A pair of green glasses or vessels, a red beret, and a bottle or vase are also identifiable among the layered elements. The tablecloth is covered with various patterned fabrics, adding texture and complexity. Behind the scene, an open window reveals a bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds, bringing depth and a suggestion of an exterior world.

The overall palette combines warm earthy tones (browns, reds, and ochres) with cool blues and blacks, creating dynamic visual contrast. The artist uses strong outlines and flat planes to define the forms, typical of the cubist and synthetic cubist approaches influenced by Picasso and Braque.

This painting is lively and rhythmic, celebrating form and colour through a stylised representation of everyday objects in a domestic or café-like setting.

This large oil on canvas is presented in a stepped black wood frame with an inner pale blue slip, which suits it well. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some surface wear and scuffing but is in a good and stable condition.

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very unique original artwork by British artist Dave Boyd, constructed from discarded books (repurposed cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards) mounted on a wooden panel in a solid wood float frame.

The surface is covered in faded rose-hued cloth, visibly aged with subtle textures, creases, and discoloration that speak to its previous life as part of a book cover. A horizontal seam running across the midline subtly divides the work, adding a sense of structure and time-worn narrative.

At the centre is a vertically oriented, geometric element: a column of interlocking trapezoid-like shapes made from different tones of book cloth—warm creams, deep burgundies, and soft pinks. These shapes form a slightly curved band, suggesting movement or tension, and are carefully aligned to echo the handmade precision of textile patchwork or marquetry.

A very unique original artwork by British artist Dave Boyd, constructed from discarded books (repurposed cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards) mounted on a wooden panel in a solid wood float frame.

The background is composed of a richly textured, burnt orange surface made from aged book cloth, divided horizontally at its midpoint, enhancing the piece’s sense of structure and symmetry. The material bears the worn, mottled patina of time, evoking a tactile warmth and nostalgic depth.

Centrally placed is a vertical arrangement of nine small rectangles, each made from a different swatch of book cloth. The Scalloped Basket

    Sold

    SOLD

A vivid and striking mid century modernist still life composition in oil, painted onto board.

This painting is a semi-abstract still life with bold shapes and expressive brushwork. It features a dark bowl or basket with a scalloped white rim sitting on a patterned, richly coloured surface, possibly a tablecloth. Next to the bowl are two round yellow and green fruits, likely a lemon and an apple.

The tablecloth has a fragmented, mosaic-like design in deep reds, blues, and blacks, creating strong visual texture and depth. The bowl or dish dominates the left side of the composition, with jagged white accents that contrast sharply with the dark background. The fruits on the lower right provide a pop of colour with their bright yellows and greens. The background wall is pale, divided into two contrasting patches of cream and olive green, adding to the geometric structure of the piece.

The painting is expressionist in style, with loose, energetic brushstrokes and abstracted forms. It emphasises contrast—between light and dark, soft and sharp, warm and cool tones. The mood is introspective and slightly mysterious, inviting the viewer to interpret the scene beyond its literal objects.

This oil on board is housed in a simple wood frame which draws attention to the painting. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Beneath the Arch

    Sold

    SOLD

An evocative semi-abstract mid-century modernist interpretation of the Viaduct in Algeciras, Spain, painted in oil onto canvas by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

A lone, abstracted figure stands beneath an arched colonnade in the foreground, gazing out across a wide promenade that curves gently toward a serene coastal horizon. In the distance, geometric blocks suggest buildings or containers, subtly evoking the industrial and maritime character of the port city.

Modernist in its ethos, the work takes on a reductionist, semi-abstract approach, and emphasises shape and composition over fine detail. Sold

    SOLD

A very well executed mid century modernist semi-abstract landscape depicting a rocky shoreline with water reflecting the rugged terrain, painted in oil onto canvas.

The scene features large rock formations in both the foreground and background, possibly part of a coastal or lakeside setting. The water is calm, reflecting the shapes and colours of the rocks, creating a mirror-like effect. In the background, hills or cliffs rise up, depicted in broad, angular shapes.

The brushstrokes are loose and expressive, giving the painting a textured, layered appearance. The artist uses both soft blended areas and sharp, angular strokes, which adds a dynamic, almost cubist-like abstraction to the rocks. Geometric Fun

    Sold

    SOLD

A very unique original abstract artwork, made up of paper that has painted, embroidered and then stitched together.

The paper has been stitched to create a three dimensional form that is mounted onto board and protected behind glass. The paper has been painted with an abstract composition using acrylic paint, and each alternating strip has been painted with different colours. As a result, the artwork changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed. If viewed from the right, we see a geometric patterning of red, black and yellow. When viewed from the left, a series of angled lines criss-cross across the lighter coloured surface. Although it is technically a static piece, we have in fact a very dynamic artwork that changes constantly. The paper itself has also been embroidered with an intricate pattern which gives it textured detail, visible when viewed closely.

The artwork is presented in a black frame and protected behind glass. It is in very good condition. Ready to hang.

  • Grounded

    Grounded

    Sold

    SOLD

A wonderfully executed mid century modernist abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

In this atmospheric composition, the artist has applied the paint thickly, creating lots of areas of impasto (where the paint stands proud from the surface) and variation in texture. Depicting what appears to be a rural landscape, the lower section of the painting has richer, earthier colours in broad sweeping brushstrokes . This juxtaposes against the lighter top half of the painting which has been painted in a mixture of white and lilac, with hints of blue underneath, alluding to the depth of layers within the painting.

There is a really earthy quality to the piece, and its abstract subject makes it an easy fit into most interiors.

The artist has used thick brushstrokes and painterly scrapes, creating movement and texture across the canvas. Flecks of red, white, and pink in the lower section suggest wildflowers in bloom, adding vibrancy and life to the landscape.

The upper half is dominated by a dynamic sky – sweeping strokes of blue interlaced with subtle scraping and palette knife marks, giving the illusion of wind or cloud drift

This oil on panel is housed in a complementary white frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has marks and scuffs.

  • Tender Affection

    Tender Affection

    Sold

    SOLD

A large and brilliantly executed mid century modernist figurative composition in oil, painted onto board by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The composition captures an intimate scene of two figures, likely a mother and child or siblings, portrayed in a semi-abstract style. The figures are rendered with simplified, almost block-like forms, emphasising the connection between them rather than intricate details. One figure, dressed in a deep blue dress, cradles a dark form that resembles a small animal or a toy, while the other, smaller figure, appears to be reaching out or gesturing.

The painting balances representational elements with a geometric abstraction, and there is a focus is on shape, colour, and form, rather than realistic details.

The palette is predominantly muted with cool, earthy tones – soft greens, dark blues, deep blacks, and off-whites. The occasional pop of yellow adds warmth and contrast to the composition, highlighting the central figures.

The artist has used thick, textured brushstrokes, building up areas of layered pigment that give a tactile quality to the painting. The brushwork is bold and expressive, with visible strokes that enhance the raw, unpolished aesthetic. This technique adds depth and movement to the otherwise serene and contemplative scene.

This oil on board is accentuated by a white painted wood frame with an inner gilt and linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some losses to its gilt edges, but is in very good condition overall.

    Size: 71.5 x 86 cm (including frame)

  • The Basket Bearer

    The Basket Bearer

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking mid-century modernist painting depicting a stylised female figure carrying a basket in each hand, executed in oil on canvas.

The composition is pared down and geometric, with the figure rendered in flat planes of colour and minimal facial detail, emphasising form, posture, and colour over realism. The subject exudes quiet strength, and is framed against a softly abstracted background.

The artist has used a restrained yet expressive palette – muted purples and orange, olive greens, pale blues, and warm creams – imbuing the scene with a serene, earthy quality. Bold, confident brushstrokes define the figure’s silhouette, while textured layering and visible brush marks add a tactile depth to the surface. There is a gentle rawness in the unfinished edges and rough outlines that lend the piece a distinctly modern, handmade character.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
