A brilliantly executed and characterful mid-century still life in oil, painted by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.
Thick swirls of creamy paint form the background of the top half of the composition, and then below this we have a darker brown area with outlines in thick strokes that mimic the appearance of wood grain. Contrasted against this earthy palette are five bright and vivid pears. There is a beautiful balance to the horizontal composition, which Cederberg is known to be adept at achieving.
Cederberg was a Swedish artist who made his debut on the art world in Helsingborg in 1922. Later he participated in the Skåne Art Association Exhibition in 1926 and the Swedish Public Art Society exhibition in Stockholm in 1941. He is represented in several public collections in Sweden.
This brilliantly done oil is beautifully presented in a silver frame with a grey border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

Depicted in this composition is an interior scene. It is very cleverly executed – at first it appears to be a view out of a window, before we realise after further investigation that it is actually a mirror reflecting the outside view. This mirror is atop a table covered in objects which appear to be balls of yarn. Surrounding the mirror are figurative drawings and paintings. In the reflection of the mirror we see a window sill lined with little pots, and outside we can discern a winter view with figures and a red tram.
This painting offers such a delightful myriad of details to explore. Painted in an expressionist style, the distinct brushstrokes give this piece its painterly feel, adding texture and tactile detail.

Although large abstract in style, we can make out elements of a still life composition. Incorporated within the broad gestural brushstrokes are 2 vessels, as well as a pair of red fruit. The objects sit against a yellow and orange background, which contrasts wonderfully with the deep blue that surrounds it. Several forms appear to lurk under the surface, and as we explore the composition we begin to see layers of lines and shapes. This multi-layered composition is a feast for the eyes, offering many forms, shapes, texture and patterns.
