Lunastal is a continuation of a series of mini abstracts responding to the colours of particularly times of the year based on the Celtic calendar.

Lunastal is the second half of summer, celebrated usually on August 1st. For Daws, this is a season of deep rich blues found in the skies and sea, that is why the presence of blue is dominant overlapping the softer pinks and yellows. Lunastal is joyful in its juxtaposition of form and use of bright colours.

This acrylic on board is framed within a white St Ives frame. tray frame, capturing the complexity of the colours within. Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition. The artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity and signature on the reverse.

A group of unidentified objects including vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface with a splash of striking red. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist has used a relatively monochrome palette with pops of colour including the green and yellow circles and red backdrop, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. Lining the water are numerous boats, their forms captured in black silhouettes that stand out against the restrained palette of blues and creams. In the foreground, the water’s edge is populated by shadowy figures of people, their silhouettes painted in the same muted black. The background is dominated by blocks of buildings outlined in bold black lines, further emphasising their structured, almost architectural quality.

Masterfully containing elements of geometric abstraction and cubism, the artist has skilfully reconstructed the scene down to geometric shapes in contrasting colours to demonstrate a sense of depth and interest to the painting.

The use of a restrained palette, primarily blues, blacks, with hints of creams, along with the bold outlines and smooth brushstrokes, creates a composition that is both cohesive and dynamic.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim wood frame. There is a light surface mark at the top right section of the painting, as well as a small area of paint loss at the top edge of the painting, as shown in photos. The frame has some age wear and scuffing.

The painting is evocative of stained glass, with bold outlines around geometric coloured shapes. The surrounding borders of the picture are painted in dark blue, with the brighter colours in the centre, almost as if light is streaming through the central area and highlighting the lit areas against the dark areas. The varnished layer of the painting also adds and enhanced this beguiling effect even further.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary subdued gilt frame. The painting has light scattered craquelure present to its varnish layer, as well as some areas of paint loss and abrasion around its edges, including some to the bottom section. The frame has some wear and scuff marks. Please note that there is some glare in the photographs due to the varnished surface.
