    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist still life composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

Here we see 4 pieces of fruit laid out on a blue fabric, but captured in a distinctly modernist style. • Orchard Apples

    Orchard Apples

    Sold

    SOLD

A very skilfully executed modernist still life composition in oil, painted onto canvas and dated 1986.

In this picture, 3 apples sit on a saucer on a white surface, with  a glimpse of wood panelling in the background. The focus here is immediately on the lusciousness of colours of the apples. The simple background enhances the deep and almost jewel-like colours of the apples. The artist has skilfully captured the myriad of red, yellow and green tones of the apples. The slightly imperfect and misshapenness of the apples are enhanced by the seemingly spontaneous and expressive brushstrokes, which capture the character of the fruit wonderfully. The colours of the apples are echoed slightly in the reflection on the saucer they are on.

The painting is housed in a beautiful gilt frame which suits the painting very well and enhances the colours within it. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Seated Trio

    Seated Trio

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed semi-abstract figurative oil composition, painted in 1964 by the established Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum, and Jönköping Museum.

The composition presents three seated figures set against a backdrop filled with warm colours.

Painted in a semi-abstract style, the artist’s deliberate omission of realistic details encourages viewers to focus on brushstrokes and colour. And as we glance across the figures from left to right, their forms become more abstract.

The use of painterly and expressive brushstrokes creates a sense of energy throughout the painting. And the clever use of a limited colour palette of rich brown and orange tones in subtle variations helps to unify the composition and create depth and three-dimensionality.

This oil on canvas is housed in complementary black-painted wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor scuffs.

  • Tulips in Pastel

    Tulips in Pastel

    Sold

    SOLD

A very elegant mid century modernist floral oil composition, painted onto canvas.

In this floral piece we have light pink tulips in a blue vase, painted in an expressionist style. Broad, gestural brushstrokes in  a range of soft, pastel colours make up this composition. The flowers and vase is set against a background of light blue and pink, which transitions into a richer blue as we move down the canvas. There is a wonderful diaphanous quality to this painting which is really easy on the eye. Floral pieces like these have a timelessness to them which make them in an easy fit in many interior settings. The lightness to this one would certainly uplift the mood of a space.

The painting is housed in a very well suited frame with a linen lined border as well as an inner gilt border which illuminates the painting wonderfully. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some minor age wear.

  • Yellow & Green Ball

    Yellow & Green Ball

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 on the reverse by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist uses a restrained palette – the picture is almost monochrome, except for the green and yellow circles, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This painting is wonderfully presented in a distressed style frame with ridge detail, and an inner linen-lined border and gilt window. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Sold

    SOLD

A well executed mid century modernist figurative composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

Depicted here are 2 figures, each in hats.  Their facial details have been intentionally left out – the artist has chosen instead to focus on the formal elements of shape, form and colour. There is a cohesive to the palette of the composition, as the background of the painting echoes the colours of the figures’ outfits.  It has been split into 3 horizontal parts, which also seem to match up with the 3 parts of the two figures (hat, head, torso).

The movement of the artist’s brush is visible in the piece, adding to its painterly character and creating a lovely textural effect. There is a timeless and pensive vibe to the piece.

It is mid afternoon, the house is quiet, and the kitchen is in repose. The cook takes a moment to rest her tired legs and aching back. She knows it won’t be long before the afternoon passes and dinner preparations for the family need to get going.

Many of us can relate to this simple scene of taking a moment to pause, and feeling the relief of having some time to breathe, before the hustle has to begin again.

This wonderful mid-century painting with its stunning expressive brushwork and pastel palette embodies such a lovely narrative.

This oil on canvas is housed in a well-suited gilt frame with an inner white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some marks to its lower edge, as well as minor losses to its gilt edges.

    Size: 47 x 39 cm (including frame)

    Blue Flowers & Lemon

    Sold

    SOLD

A lively mid-century modernist style still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1953.

In the foreground, a vase of striking blue flowers commands attention. Beside the vase, a single lemon, a burst of radiant yellow, also rests on the windowsill. The backdrop presents a view of buildings and houses that have been painted in light pastel shades of blues, yellows and pinks.

The artist has skilfully simplified the composition down to blocks of geometric shapes in contrasting shades and bold outlines, maintaining the modernist focus on geometric abstraction, as well as demonstrating a sense of depth to the painting.

The brushstrokes across the canvas are expressive and lightly textured, contributing to the painting’s dynamic quality.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary cream frame. The painting is in excellent condition, and the frame has very minor scuffs, commensurate with age.

    Size: 66 x 39 cm (including frame)
