An expressive mid-century nude figurative portrait, executed in oil onto canvas.

The artist has worked in an expressive manner, using loose and scribble-like brushstrokes to convey the raw emotion and fleeting nature of the scene.

A large and very unique mid century modernist oil composition of two figures, painted onto canvas by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The artist has flattened the surface, reducing the figures down into planes of pastel colour, that fit together like a puzzle. The palette is restrained, using a range of light blues, greys and browns. To add depth to the picture, the painting is filled with these vertical patterns, that are almost like seams that open up to reveal layers of colour underneath.

This very interesting composition is unframed but can be hung as is. The painting has some scattered craquelure, commensurate with age. The craquelure does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

A quirky and heavily textured mid-century figurative composition, painted on oil onto canvas and dated 1951.

The composition offers a captivating glimpse into an interior setting where a nude figure reclines upon a couch, her posture relaxed with one knee raised. The subject’s gaze turns away, caught unaware.

The couch where the figure lays captures our attention. Adorned with a striking floral print motif in shades of green and pink, it adds a dynamic burst of colour against the neutral backdrop.

Beneath the figure, the floor unfolds in a black and white chequered board pattern. An apple with a single bite taken from it rests on the floor, introducing a subtle narrative element.

Overall, it is a very thoughtful and interesting composition, with meticulous attention to detail as well as refined and heavily textured brushstrokes.

This painting comes unframed, and is an oil that has been painted onto canvas which has been laid down to board, making the painting quite heavy. There is craquelure present to the upper left as shown due to thickness of paint.

A wonderfully expressive and brilliantly executed figurative composition in mixed media (oil, watercolour gouache), painted onto board.

A lovely and endearing miniature oil on canvas depicting a scene of a pedestrian walkway on a fine summer’s day.

A woman in the foreground can be seen walking with her 2 children to drop them off at school. They are holding flowers in their hands, that they’ve picked along their journey.

Rich and saturated colours fill this energetic painting; and the short and textured brushstrokes imbue the work with a sense of liveliness and joy.

What’s special too is that the artist has uniquely enhanced the greenery portion by adding graphite detailing in a ‘scribbled’ manner, adding a sense of three-dimensionality to the trees.

The painting is housed in a white card mount, and a green stained wood frame with a blue and gold inner wood border. The colours of the frame pick up on the colours within the painting beautifully, making it stand out even more. An outstanding mid-century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The painting captures a scene of two ballerinas surrounded by an abstract background. On the ballerinas, rhe artist’s brushstrokes are gentle and soft, reflecting a careful attention to detail. Intentionally working with a limited colour palette, the artist has reduced the area around the ballerinas to angular planes in different gradients of brown.. Details such as the small but striking red lips of the figures, as well as the layout of flat shapes and planes are typical of Lundqvist’s style.

  • Cubist Figure & Fruits (Large)

    Cubist Figure & Fruits (Large)

    Sold

    SOLD

A very large and brilliantly executed mid-century cubist painting that presents a fragmented figure seated beside a simple pedestal table holding a cluster of rounded fruit forms, painted in oil onto board.

In this striking composition, the human form is reduced to angular planes and intersecting facets, the face and body articulated through a network of geometric shapes in pale cream, brown, and muted green tones, accented by deep blacks. The table and fruit echo this cubist language, with rounded grapes and apples broken into overlapping, flat colour areas.

The style is distinctly cubist, emphasising structural simplification and the interplay of light and shadow through geometric abstraction. The artist balances areas of dense black with softer sage greens, creating a rhythmic tension across the composition. Brushstrokes are firm, deliberate, and textured, with the layered paint adding subtle depth to the otherwise flat geometry.

The restrained palette – creams, greens, blacks, and teal-blues – contributes to the painting’s harmony, while the angular construction of the figure and still life demonstrates the artist’s focus on form and design rather than naturalistic representation.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary heavy solid wood frame with an oak-toned finish. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

The composition is built from simplified geometric shapes and flat planes, balancing figuration with semi-abstraction. The palette is harmonious yet lively. The brushstrokes are bold, visible, and confident. They have been applied with a thickness that lends the painting a tactile presence.

This work embodies the modernist pursuit of distilling everyday life into essential shapes and colours, creating both intimacy and abstraction within a single frame.

  • Silhouette in Shadow

    Silhouette in Shadow

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking mid-century figurative oil painting that presents an enigmatic image of a figure cloaked in shadow, executed in oil onto canvas

The subject, defined by broad, gestural brushstrokes, is rendered in deep blacks and beige, wearing a dark coat and a brimmed hat that casts an air of mystery. The anonymity of the face  – left intentionally undefined – imbues the piece with a sense of intrigue and ambiguity, leaving space for the viewer’s own interpretation.

The background is composed of layered tones of cool grey-blues and muted teals, painted with bold, sweeping strokes that create a textured, almost turbulent atmosphere. The contrast between the shadowy figure and the lighter, restless background emphasises the sense of isolation and presence.

Executed in a loose, expressive style, the brushwork is raw and unrefined, conveying mood and form over detail. The palette is restrained yet powerful, relying on dark neutrals against cold, subdued hues to evoke both drama and introspection.

A mid-century figurative oil painting that presents an intimate portrait of a young sitter, captured with a quiet yet compelling presence, and executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1955.

The subject, shown against a softly modulated grey-blue background, gazes directly at the viewer with dark, thoughtful eyes and a composed expression. Her short, dark hair frames a delicately modelled face, rendered with confident, angular brushstrokes that balance sensitivity with structure.

The artist has used a restrained but effective palette, dominated by muted blues, greys, and greens, contrasted with the fresh luminosity of the sitter’s yellow blouse. A large and outstanding mid century modernist abstract figurative composition in oil, painted onto board by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting presents a bold and dynamic interpretation of the human form, fragmented into intersecting shapes and saturated blocks of colour. At the centre, a green torso-like shape anchors the composition, surrounded by gestural planes of midnight blue, ivory white, forest green, sky grey, and cerulean. Hints of yellow and red punctuate the palette with energy, while the heavy use of impasto and palette knife work brings a sense of raw physicality to the surface.

Though abstract, the overlapping forms and contours evoke the impression of a seated or contemplative figure, abstracted almost to the point of pure form. The figure emerges from and dissolves into the background, suggesting emotional introspection or transformation. The painter’s brushwork is assertive yet nuanced, blending thickly applied oil with moments of scraped texture and layered opacity.

In both its materiality and expressive ambiguity, the painting speaks to the search for identity through abstraction, emotion, and gesture.

Close to a metre in height, this painting will make a statement piece in any interior.

This oil on canvas is housed in a very well-suited hessian lined frame with an inner silver border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor scuffing.

    Size: 99 x 78 cm (including frame)

A simple yet sophisticated mid-century modernist style painting, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The composition focuses on a female figure set against an abstracted and minimalist architectural background. The buildings are rendered with clean, almost block-like forms which are devoid of intricate details and that evoke a Mediterranean aesthetic. The woman’s dark dress, adorned with small dots, contrasts with the otherwise monochromatic palette, adding a subtle focus on her presence.

The brushstrokes are soft and gentle, contributing to the smoothness of the surface. The painting predominantly uses muted tones of grey and white, accentuating the calm and contemplative mood. The woman’s dress introduces a slightly warmer tone, and her yellow handbag serves as the only bright accent, drawing the viewer’s attention and breaking the monochromatic harmony.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs at its edges as shown.

    Size: 49 x 57 cm (including frame)
