Large planes and blocks of colour in a deep and rich palette have been applied to the canvas, with a distinct focus on the formal qualities of shape, form and colour. The artist has used angled lines and geometric shapes to compose the figure. He has left out realistic details, and has abstracted the portrait he has painted. He celebrates the medium of oil, leaving visible the strokes of his large paint brush, as well as creating textured areas of impasto that contrast with the smoother planes of painted areas.

A female figure in an azure blue dress sits on a bright yellow chair. All realistic details have been omitted, drawing our attention instead to painterly elements such as shape, form and colour. Some aspects of this painting are reminiscent of figurative works by Modgliani, such as the elongation of the figure. The artist lengthens her body, keeping her torso parallel with the back of the chair, which has also been elongated, drawing our eyes downwards and creating a lovely sense of rhythm, ease, and restfulness.
