A small and engaging animal composition, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This painting portrays a large pink pig standing on a patch of earth, with a soft rolling green landscape and a muted sky with a few wispy white clouds in the background. The pig is depicted in a folk-art style, characterized by its simplified, rounded form, gentle expression, and minimal yet expressive details.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.

Its small head peeks out from the dense fleece, with a calm, neutral expression and light-coloured eyes that subtly contrast against its dark face.

The background is simple and muted, with a pale cream-colored sky featuring faint, wispy clouds, and a gently sloping greenish pasture beneath the sheep. The artist uses a restrained color palette, allowing the bold black form of the sheep to be the central focus.
