A small and engaging nautical whale composition, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This painting features a charming, folk-art-style depiction of a narwhal swimming in the ocean, with a steamship sailing above the waves in the background. The narwhal, known as the “unicorn of the sea,” is painted in soft, muted beige tones, with a long, straight tusk extending from its head. Its tail curls gracefully, adding a whimsical touch to the composition. The narwhal’s small, round eye gives it an expressive and peaceful demeanour.

The ocean is depicted in layered shades of blue, creating a simple yet effective sense of movement in the water. Above the waves, a small black steamship with a red-flagged smokestack is seen puffing grey smoke into the sky. The sky is a soft, aged beige, lending the painting a weathered, nostalgic feel.

The artwork is framed in a black wood frame, which contrasts nicely with the lighter tones of the painting. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
