A small and engaging  animal composition , painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This painting features a black sheep standing against a minimalistic rural backdrop, painted in a folk-art style. The sheep’s large, rounded body is covered in a thick, textured wool coat, giving it a slightly exaggerated, almost whimsical appearance. Its small head peeks out from the dense fleece, with a calm, neutral expression and light-coloured eyes that subtly contrast against its dark face.

The background is simple and muted, with a pale cream-colored sky featuring faint, wispy clouds, and a gently sloping greenish pasture beneath the sheep. The artist uses a restrained color palette, allowing the bold black form of the sheep to be the central focus.

The painting is framed in a rustic black wooden frame, complementing the dark wool of the sheep and enhancing the vintage, traditional feel of the artwork. The piece exudes a timeless, charming simplicity, celebrating rural life with a warm, understated elegance.

The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffing.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
