A small and engaging animal composition, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This painting depicts a stylized game bird, standing in profile with a strong and elegant stance. The bird’s plumage is rendered in warm earthy tones, including shades of cream, rust red, and deep brown, creating a visually striking contrast. Its head is sharply defined, with a black beak, a red eye patch, and a piercing gaze that gives it a sense of alertness.

The bird’s legs and talons are bright yellow and its tail feathers are elegantly fanned out in a light cream colour, adding a delicate touch to its otherwise bold appearance.

The background is minimalistic and textured, with a soft, muted beige sky fading into a dark, earthy brown ground, keeping the focus on the central figure.

The artwork is framed in a rustic black wooden frame, which complements the bird’s features and enhances its traditional, handcrafted feel. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffing.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
