• Boats by the Lighthouse

    Boats by the Lighthouse

    Sold

    SOLD

A visually engaging mid-century modernist style composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1959 by the established Swedish artist Richard Björklund (1897–1974), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmo Museum, Ystads Art Museum, and others.

Combining elements of abstraction with recognisable forms, the artist has used geometric shapes as well as bold, simplified lines to depict a lighthouse, some boats, and surrounding structures. The careful arrangement of shapes and colours results in a dynamic yet serene composition, whilst emphasising the forms of the main subjects.

The brushstrokes are smooth and deliberate, with clean transitions between blocks of colour. The colour palette is composed of cool tones like shades of blues and purples, juxtaposed with rich yellow and white. These colours create contrast and depth to the composition. Overall, there is a strong focus on form and structure over detail.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Cubist Harbour

    Cubist Harbour

    Sold

    SOLD

A visually striking mid-century modernist composition of a harbour scene, painted in oil onto canvas.

A body of water occupies the middle ground of the canvas. Lining the water are numerous boats, their forms captured in black silhouettes that stand out against the restrained palette of blues and creams. In the foreground, the water’s edge is populated by shadowy figures of people, their silhouettes painted in the same muted black. The background is dominated by blocks of buildings outlined in bold black lines, further emphasising their structured, almost architectural quality.

Masterfully containing elements of geometric abstraction and cubism, the artist has skilfully reconstructed the scene down to geometric shapes in contrasting colours to demonstrate a sense of depth and interest to the painting.

The use of a restrained palette, primarily blues, blacks, with hints of creams, along with the bold outlines and smooth brushstrokes, creates a composition that is both cohesive and dynamic.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim wood frame. There is a light surface mark at the top right section of the painting, as well as a small area of paint loss at the top edge of the painting, as shown in photos. The frame has some age wear and scuffing.
