On first glance the painting seems almost voyeuristic – we see the backs of two men staring at the undressed female figure. As we take the time to study the painting, in particular the female figure, we begin to notice her expression – she stares directly at us with an enigmatic gaze, completely aware of her position in the room and the attention she holds, both from us as well as the male figures we see. Her confidence is unmissable. Notably, the painting is by a female artist (Marianne Kanter). Could it be that this painting was a comment on the ‘male gaze’, a term coined a few years before in the 70s? A vibrant post-impressionist oil composition, painted in 1993.
This modernist oil painting depicts an abstracted scene of leaves blowing in the wind. To the bottom left of the composition, the artist has use long gestural strokes in thick, bright non-naturalistic colours to depict the long blades of grass. Outlined in blue are a group of leaves (or trees), with one up in the sky blowing away. The brushstrokes and colour palette give this painting a wonderful sense of movement and dynamism.
The painting is housed in an off white wood frame with an inner gilt border that illuminates the painting. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
