A fantastic modernist coastal and landscape study painted in oil onto canvas.

In this composition there is a distinct emphasis on the forms within the landscape – the artist uses distinct outlines, and blocks of contrasting colours to create a sense of three dimensionality. The artist reminds us that the picture is essentially a flat surface covered in colours and arranged in a certain order, where the repetitive blocks build up to form a complex field. Despite the lean into abstraction, we are still able to discern the view before us, where a large group of boulders surrounded by greenery look out towards a lake or sea, with more land in the distance.

This oil on canvas is housed in a lovely wood frame with visible grain and an inner cream coloured window. There is a tiny pinhole to the top left corner of the painting, as shown in the close up, probably from previous framing. There is a slight ‘wrinkling’ to the upper left section of the canvas but this is more obvious in the photos than it is in real life. The painting and frame are otherwise in very good vintage condition.
