By the Port
SOLD.
A soothing and brilliantly executed composition of a port, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1945 by the established Swedish artist Richard Björklund (1897–1974) whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmo Museum, Ystads Art Museum, and others.
The painting captures boats docked by a port, with several cargo containers in the background. The artist has worked under a largely modernist ethos, simplifying the scene down to blocks of colours, using contrasting tones to create depth within the picture.
The predominant use of muted shades add a soothing quality to the painting, and through the use of short dabs of brushstrokes, the artist has skilfully captured the transient atmospheric conditions causing the rippling effects on the water’s surface.
This oil on canvas is housed a complementary deep profile gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
