A small and engaging  animal composition , painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This painting depicts a black horse in mid-stride, gracefully moving across a neutral-toned landscape. The folk-art style is characterized by its simple yet elegant form, with clean lines and a minimalistic approach. The horse’s body is painted in a solid, deep black, contrasting against the soft, muted background of pale beige and gray tones.

The horse’s head is slightly lowered, its ears pricked forward, and its tail is slightly raised, giving a sense of movement and attentiveness. The white highlight in its eye adds a touch of life and expression. The background remains minimal, with the ground subtly shaded to indicate depth, while the sky remains open and pale, creating a sense of calm and space.

This oil is painted onto canvas which although unframed, is meant to be hung as is. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
